Severe Thunderstorms in the East Sunday; Excessive Heat Lingers in the Southern U.S. and Returning to California

Scattered damaging winds from severe thunderstorms will be possible across parts of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic States Sunday. June of 2020 continued the roller coaster type of weather pattern as the previous month of May across south central and southeast Colorado, with periods of warm and dry conditions followed by periods of cool and wet conditions, as a few weather systems moved across the state. On June 9th, measurable snowfall was recorded across portions of south central and southeast Colorado, especially across Northern El Paso County and the Palmer Divide. June also brought a few days of severe weather across the region, and produced localized areas of heavy rainfall. However, for the month of June as a whole, above to well above normal temperatures and below to well below normal precipitation was experienced across most of south central and southeast Colorado, save for a few pockets of above normal precipitation across the southeast plains.

The preliminary average temperature in Alamosa for the past month of June was 61.8 degrees. This is 2.2 degrees above normal and makes June of 2020, tied with June of 1988 and June of 2006, as the 20th warmest June on record in Alamosa. This, remains well behind the warmest June, 2012, when the average June temperature was 64.5 degrees in Alamosa.  Alamosa recorded 0.17 inches of precipitation through the month of June, which is 0.32 inches below normal. Alamosa recorded a trace of snow through the month of June, which keeps the 2019-2020 seasonal snowfall in Alamosa at 16.8 inches. This is 9.0 inches below normal, and makes the 2019-2020 snow season the 14th least snowiest on record in Alamosa.    

 

The preliminary average temperature in Colorado Springs for the past month of June was 69.6 degrees. This is 4.5 degrees above normal and makes June of 2020, tied with June of 2010 as the 10th warmest June on record in Colorado Springs. This remains well below the warmest June, 2012, when the average monthly temperature was 73.3 degrees. Colorado Springs recorded 0.78 inches of precipitation through the month of June. This is 1.72 inches below normal and makes June of 2020, tied with June of 1985, as the 29th driest June on record in Colorado Springs.Colorado Springs recorded a trace of snow on June 9th, which keeps the 2019-2020 seasonal snowfall in Colorado Springs at 56.4 inches. This is 18.7 inches above normal and makes the 2019-2020 snow season the 15th snowiest on record in Colorado Springs. Hail was also recorded at the Colorado Springs Airport on June 19th.

 

The preliminary average temperature in Pueblo for the past month of June was 74.5 degrees. This is 4.5 degrees above normal and makes June of 2020 the 9th warmest June on record in Pueblo. This remains well below the warmest June, 2012, when the average monthly temperature in Pueblo was 77.0 degrees.  Pueblo recorded 0.66 inches of precipitation through the month of June, which is 0.70 inches below normal. Pueblo recorded 0.0 inches of snow through the month of June, which is normal. This keeps the 2019-2020 seasonal snowfall in Pueblo at 36.2 inches, which is 4.4 inches above normal and makes the 2019-2020 snow season the 32nd snowiest on record in Pueblo.    

 

Looking ahead into July in Alamosa, the average high temperature of 82 degrees on July 1st warms to 83 degrees by July 4th,  before cooling back to 81 degrees by the end of the month. The average low temperature of 45 degrees on July 1st  warms to 48 degrees by the end of the month. The average temperature for the month of July in Alamosa is 64.6 degrees.  Alamosa averages 0.97 inches of precipitation through the month of July. On average, July is the warmest month and second wettest month of the year in Alamosa.   

In Colorado Springs,  the average high temperature of 84 degrees on July 1st warms to 85 degrees by July 4th,  before cooling back to 84 degrees by the end of the month. The average low temperature of 55 degrees on July 1st  warms to 58 degrees by July 21st, before cooling to 57 degrees by the end of the month. The average temperature for the month of July in Colorado Springs is 70.9 degrees.  Colorado Springs averages 2.84 inches of precipitation through the month of July.  On average, July is the warmest month and second wettest month of the year in Colorado Springs.     

In Pueblo, the average high temperature of 92 degrees on July 1st warms to 94 degrees by July 10th,  before cooling back to 92 degrees by the end of the month. The average low temperature of 57 degrees on July 1st  warms to 60 degrees by July 24th, before cooling to 59 degrees by the end of the month. The average temperature for the month of July in Pueblo is 75.8 degrees.  Pueblo averages 2.06 inches of precipitation through the month of July.  On average, July is the warmest month and second wettest month of the year in Pueblo.
