Severe Thunderstorms in the East Sunday; Excessive Heat Lingers in the Southern U.S. and Returning to California

Scattered damaging winds from severe thunderstorms will be possible across parts of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic States Sunday. Excessive heat will continue over the southern U.S. Sunday before another round of heat arrives Monday through the central and southern U.S. spreading into the East by Independence Day. This page shows a variety of lightning data for the state of Colorado. Graphs include the average number of Cloud-to Ground (CG) flashes which occur each day over the state. Hour by hour CG data is also shown by month. The average monthly flash data is shown, along with a rough average of the number of CG flashes for each county. 

 


 

The graph above shows the average number of CG flashes which occurred over the state of Colorado from 1996 to 2016 (21 years inclusive) for each day of the year (blue line).. A 7 day running mean is also shown (red line). Please click on the image for a larger view.

The table above shows the average number of lightning flashes that occur per hour for each month of the year over the state of Colorado. Example: between the time 22-23 UTC (4 - 5 pm MDT) in the month of July, there are typically 523.0 lightning flashes across the state of Colorado.  Time in the table below is in "Z" time, or UTC time. During the Summer in Colorado, 12Z = 6am MDT, 00Z = 6 pm MDT.



The average number of lightning flashes for any given day for each month are shown below:
