 ...ASTORIA 2017 WEATHER IN REVIEW...

 ================================================================
 MONTHLY WEATHER RECAPS...

JANUARY...COOL WEATHER STARTED THE NEW YEAR, WITH BREEZY EAST
WINDS THROUGH THE 7TH. SHOWERS ON THE 7TH BROUGH SPOTTY SNOW
DOWN TO THE BEACHES, BUT ACCUMULATIONS WERE SPOTTY. ASTORIA
SAW A DUSTING, BUT HIGHER HILLS PICKED UP SEVERAL INCHES OF
SNOW. AREAS FROM LINCOLN CITY SOUTHWARD SAW MORE SNOW, WITH
THE MOST BEING 3.5 INCHES AT HECETA HEAD.

MILDER AIR FROM THE PACIFIC SPREAD BACK ONSHORE BY THE 8TH
AND 9TH, WITH 1.25 TO 1.75 INCHES OF RAIN FALLING. STRONGER
FRONT ARRIVED ON THE 17TH AND 18TH. SOUTH WINDS GUSTED
60 TO 75 MPH, WITH SEAS NEAR 30 FEET. SOUTH WINDS ALSO
WERE QUITE WARM, WITH TEMPERATURES SPIKING IN THE UPPER 50S.
TWO TO 3 INCHES OF RAIN FELL AT ASTORIA, BUT MORE FELL IN
THE WILLAPA HILLS AND COAST RANGE. THIS PUSHED RIVERS UPWARD
    WITH SOME FLOODING REPORTED.

FEBRUARY...RATHER STRONG COLD FRONT PUSHED ACROSS REGION ON THE
4TH AND 5TH, WITH ALMOST 2.00 INCHES OF RAIN AT ASTORIA.
BUT MORE IMPRESSIVE WAS THE COLD AIR BEHIND THE FRONT. COLD
ENOUGH FOR SNOW. SNOW FELL AT MANY LOCATIONS AROUND ASTORIA,
WITH 2.0 INCHES AT THE AIRPORT AND 4.0 INCHES IN DOWNTOWN
ASTORIA. NEARLY A FOOT OF SNOW FELL IN THE COAST RANGE.

AFTERWARDS, IT REMAINED RATHER WET AND UNSETTLED, BUT MILD.
THIS ALLOWED FOR SNOWMELT IN THE COAST RANGE. ANOTHER WET
FRONT ROLLED ONSHORE ON THE 8TH AND 9TH, BRINGING ALMOST
3.50 INCHES OF RAIN TO ASTORIA, BUT 5 TO 7 INCHES TO THE
COAST RANGE. THIS RESULTED IN MANY COASTAL RIVERS RISING
ABOVE FLOOD STAGE. RIVERS CRESTED LATE ON 9TH INTO 10TH.
ANOTHER FRONT ARRIVED ON 15TH, WITH SOUTH WINDS GUSTING
60 TO 75 MPH. PEAK WIND AT ASTORIA AIRPORT WAS 64 MPH.

MARCH...WHY STOP AT 2 MONTHS OF WIND AND RAIN? MOTHER NATURE
ADDED A THIRD...AS MARCH ROARED IN LIKE A LION WITH GUSTY
SOUTHERLY WINDS AND HEAVY RAIN. A STRONG FRONT ON THE 3RD
BROUGHT OVER AN INCH OF RAIN AND 40 TO 50 MPH SOUTH WINDS.
ACTIVE PATTERN CONTINUED FOR MOST OF MARCH, WITH WINDY
AND WET FRONTS ARRIVING ABOUT EVERY OTHER DAY BETWEEN THE
5TH AND 21ST. STRONGEST FRONT WAS ON THE 18TH AND 19TH,
WITH WINDS GUSTING 50 TO 60 MPH. IT WAS THE 6TH WETTEST
MARCH ON RECORD FOR ASTORIA, WITH 14.45 INCHES OF RAIN.

MARCH QUIETED DOWN QUITE A BIT LATER IN THE MONTH...WITH
WEAKER FRONTS AND RAIN AT TIMES. MARCH WENT OUT LIKE A
LAMB...WITH PARTLY CLOUDY SKIES...RELATIVELY LIGHT WINDS
    AND TEMPERATURES IN THE 50S.

APRIL...AHEM, MOTHER NATURE? YES SHE WAS BUSY, BRINGING YET
ANOTHER VERY WET MONTH TO THE ASTORIA AREA. RAIN FELL ON
25 DAYS OF APRIL (NORMAL IS 18) WAS THE MOST FOR AN APRIL
SINCE 1993. TEMPERATURES WERE NEAR NORMAL FOR APRIL.

MAY...RATHER TYPICAL MAY, WITH PLENTY OF CLOUDS AND RAIN AT
TIMES. OVERALL, NOT ALL THAT EVENTFUL FOR A MAY.

JUNE...TYPICAL JUNE, WITH VARYING DEGREES OF ONSHORE FLOW.
RAINIEST PERIOD WAS MIDMONTH, WITH FAIRLY WET FRONT MOVING
ACROSS THE AREA ON THE 15TH. ASTORIA PICKED UP OVER AN
INCH OF RAIN, ALONG WITH SOUTH WINDS GUSTING TO 45 MPH.
TASTE OF SUMMER TO CLOSE THE MONTH, AS OFFSHORE WINDS ON
24TH BROUGHT DRY DOWNSLOPE WINDS OFF THE COAST RANGE
DOWN TO THE COASTAL AREAS. TEMPERATURES SPIKED IN THE
LOWER 90S, WITH 93 RECORDED AT THE ASTORIA AIRPORT. THIS
WAS THE 5TH WARMEST DAY IN JUNE EVER FOR ASTORIA, AND ONLY
THE 17TH TIME THAT ASTORIA HAS REACHED AT LEAST 90 DEG IN
JUNE SINCE RECORDS STARTED BACK IN 1892.

JULY...A RATHER BENIGN MONTH OF WEATHER...BUT NOT MUCH RAIN.
IT WAS THE 8TH DRIEST JULY ON RECORD FOR ASTORIA, WITH ONLY
0.10 INCH (DRIEST JULY WAS 1896/1960, WITH 0.01" OF RAIN).
FOR THE MOST PART...HIGH TEMPERATURES WERE A BIT COOLER THAN
NORMAL FOR JULY...BUT WITH NIGHT TIME TEMPERATURES UP A BIT
THE OVERALL AVERAGE TEMPERATURE RIGHT AT NORMAL.

AUGUST...MOST OF AUGUST WAS ON THE MILD SIDE AND DRY. ASIDE
FROM A FEW DROPS AT OTHER TIMES IN AUGUST, ALL OF THE RAIN
FELL ON 2 DAYS, THE 12TH AND 13TH. AFTERWARDS, GREAT
SUMMER BEACH WEATHER RETURNED WITH PARTLY TO MOSTLY SUNNY
    DAYS AND SEASONABLE TEMPERATURES.

SEPTEMBER...A DELIGHTFUL MONTH...WITH MILD TEMPERATURES AND
SLIGHTLY ABOVE NORMAL RAINFALL. THE HIGH OF 91 DEG ON 4TH
CAPPED WHAT WAS FOR THE MOST PART A GREAT SUMMER FOR ASTORIA.

OCTOBER...NICE MILD WEATHER STARTED THE MONTH, HIGHS IN THE 60S
AND EVEN LOWER 70S. BUT THAT WOULD CHANGE BY THE 6TH AND 7TH
AS RETURN OF PACIFIC FRONTS BROUGHT RAIN AND WINDS. ON THE
11TH, SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS PRODUCED SOME FUNNEL CLOUDS
AND WATERSPOUTS. NO DAMAGE REPORTED, BUT WATERSPOUT NEAR
    TILLAMOOK WAS SEEN BY MANY.

AN ATMOSPHERIC RIVER ARRIVED ON THE 17TH TO THE PACIFIC NW.
INITIALLY, HEAVY RAIN WAS FOCUSED OVER WESTERN WASHINGTON. BUT
ON THE 18TH AND 19TH, THE FRONT SAGGED SOUTHWARD, WITH HEAVY
RAIN OVER THE ASTORIA AREA. BETWEEN THE 18TH AND 22ND, NEARLY
6 TO 9 INCHES OF RAIN FELL OVER THE ASTORIA AND SURROUNDING
AREA. THE HEAVIEST RAIN FALLING ON THE 21ST, WHEN 3.79 INCHES
FELL IN ONE DAY AT ASTORIA AIRPORT. THIS WAS THE 2ND WETTEST
DAY EVER FOR ASTORIA (WETTEST OCT DAY IS 4.17" ON 3 OCT 1927).
A COMMON SIGHT WAS THE OCCASIONALLY FLOODED LOW-LYING AREAS
DUE TO A COMBINATION OF TOO MUCH RAIN FALLING TOO FAST AND
LEAF-CLOGGED DRAINS AS WELL AS SMALL STREAMS/RIVER FLOODING.

NOVEMBER...IT WAS A WET MONTH AND QUITE MILD MONTH FOR ASTORIA.
SEVERAL FRONTS PUSHED ACROSS AREA...WITH THE STRONGEST AND
WETTEST PERIOD OCCURRING AROUND THANKSGIVING. ON THE 24TH...
3 TO 5 INCHES OF RAIN FELL ACROSS THE AREA...CREATING LOTS
OF LOW LYING FLOODING. EARLY ON THE 25TH...MANY OF THE
LARGER RIVERS CRESTED LESS THAN A FOOT ABOVE FLOOD STAGE
    WITH MINOR FLOODING REPORTED.

WITH SOME MANY CLOUDY AND WET DAYS...TEMPERATURES NEVER
DROPPED BELOW 34 DEG. WHILE NOT ALL THAT RARE...THIS WAS
THE SECOND FREEZE-FREE OCT-NOV SINCE 2009, AND THE FIRST
TIME SINCE 1943/1944 THERE WAS BACK TO BACK YEARS WITH
SUCH (2016 AND 2017). TYPICALLY, ASTORIA SEES ITS FIRST
FALL 32 DEG OR COLDER AROUND NOV 6. BUT THIS YEAR, NOTHING.
IT WONT HAPPEN UNTIL MID DECEMBER.

DECEMBER...TYPICAL DECEMBER WITH MIX OF WET AND MILD DAYS...
WITH SOME CHILLY RAIN DAYS. OVERALL...MOST OF THE MONTH
WAS NOT THAT OUT OF ORDINARY. STRONGEST FRONT ROLLED ACROSS
THE AREA ON THE 28TH AND 29TH, BRINGING HEAVY RAIN AND
SOUTH WINDS THAT GUSTED 50 TO 60 MPH.

FIRST FREEZE OF THE 2017-18 WINTER OCCURRED ON DEC 15,
MORE THAN A MONTH LATER THAN WHAT IS NORMALLY EXPECTED.
