Summary of August 16, 2017 Tornadoes and Heavy Rainfall Event

Overview

During the evening of August 16th, a line of showers and thunderstorms lifted north through southern Minnesota with rotation in some of the stronger embedded cells. Multiple tornadoes occurred during the evening hours. In addition, a prolonged period of moderate to heavy rain produced up to 9 inches of rain in southwestern Minnesota.

Summary: Tornado The strongest tornado of the day developed in northern Nicollet County and lifted into Sibley County. This was a multi-vortex tornado. A video shows one vortex stuck a farmsted directly causing significant damage to trees and out buildings.

Summary: A tornado developed east-northeast of Winthrop and tracked toward the west-northwest. It flattened some corn, uprooted trees, and caused other tree damage. Near the end of its path, it destroyed a structurally compromised barn. The maximum wind speed is estimated to have been 80 mph. Most of the path was determined through combination of the NWS Storm Survey and high-res satellite imagery.

Summary: A weak circulation develop south of New Prague and moved across the western part of town. There was minor tree damage in Le Sueur County that matched up with radar. The tornado knocked over a tree in a cemetery, caused minor damage to trees and outbuildings, and blew over a chimney in Scott County.

north through Minnesota during the afternoon and evening of 
August 16 2017. The tornado count has been updated to 10 with more 
tornadoes still possible as videos are reviewed.
