Heavy Precipitation in the West; Wintry Mix in the North; Fire Weather in the High Plains

Pacific moisture will continue to bring locally heavy coastal/lower elevation rain and heavy mountain snow to the West Coast and portions of the Intermountain West through Monday. A wintry mix will create hazardous travel across the northern Plains and Upper Midwest into early Monday. Date of 1st Tornado in Wisconsin

With tornadoes in the news over the past week, we've had some questions about our tornado season here in WI. While we can get tornadoes at any time of the year, it tends to pick up going into June (peak), July and August. In the past 15 years in Wisconsin, there have been 5 years that have had the first tornado of the year occur after today's date (5/23). Bottom line: while we don't have tornadoes in our forecast at the moment and have yet to have one in Wisconsin in 2019, it is important to be prepare on those days when we are forecasting them, particularly with night tornadoes similar to what happened in Missouri Wednesday night. -Tim Halbach, Warning Coordination Meteorologist
