Daily thunderstorm chances begin today with severe thunderstorms possible in the afternoon and evening through Friday. Heat and humidity also begin to increase, with the regional heat risk rising to Moderate/Severe beginning Thursday afternoon and Friday afternoon. Heat indices over 100º F will be possible, primarily in lower elevations near and east of the I-81 corridor.
Increasing heat and humidity is expected through late this week. This results in a major heat risk that peaks during the afternoon hours of Thursday and Friday when heat index values may approach 100 to 105º F.
Showers and a few thunderstorms are likely this morning. A second round of showers and thunderstorms is expected to develop near the Appalachians midday, then move east toward I-95 through the mid to late afternoon. Storms then move southeast of the Chesapeake Bay early this evening. The strongest storms may contain strong to damaging wind gusts and sporadic hail.
Additional showers and thunderstorms are possible Thursday afternoon and evening. There is some uncertainty in how many storms will form, and exactly when, but any storms that do develop could contain very gusty winds.
A cold front approaches Friday. There is higher confidence in thunderstorms occurring, and these may again contain damaging wind gusts or hail.
