Isolated Severe Storms in the Midwest; Fire Weather Concerns in the Northern Plains; Record Heat in the West

Isolated severe storms are possible across parts of the Florida Peninsula and the Great Lakes to Lower Missouri Valley and south-central Plains late this afternoon and early evening. High pressure builds overhead today, bringing sunny skies and moderate temperatures. The next cold front moves into the region on Wednesday, delivering showers and a chance of thunderstorms, some of which could produce gusty winds west of I-81. Showers may linger on Thursday in the mountains before drier air and high pressure returns to the area Friday.
A recent update to the Drought Monitor has maintained widespread D2 (Severe Drought) conditions to the region. Additionally, D3 (Extreme Drought) conditions are now in place along the I-64 corridor.
