Dangerous, Heat Wave Persists in the Eastern U.S.; Severe Weather Expected in the Central Plains and Mid-Atlantic

A prolonged, dangerous heat wave will persist through the Independence Day weekend across the Ohio Valley, Mid-South, and East Coast. Severe thunderstorms are expected to produce damaging wind gusts from the Upper Ohio Valley into the Mid Atlantic, and across the central Great Plains this afternoon and evening. Extreme heat & high humidity continue through the holiday weekend with daily chances of thunderstorms in the afternoon & evening hours. Some thunderstorms could become severe with the potential for damaging wind gusts. Heat indices ranging from 105-110 continue through Sunday before gradually decreasing.
Several days of hot temperatures are expected to impact the region into the holiday weekend. This will yield Major to Extreme levels of Heat Risk.
With a lengthy bout of hot temperatures through the holiday weekend, ensure you find ways to stay hydrated and out of the heat. Temperatures remain very warm into the overnight hours as well which will exacerbate these issues.
An upper ridge building across the area will lead to well above average temperatures over the region into the Independence Day holidays weekend. Widespread highs will push into the 97 to 103 degree range, with even higher heat indices. These are some historical daily, monthly, and all-time records.
