Severe Thunderstorms and Heavy Rainfall Across the South; Heat Spreads Across the West and Southern Plains

A couple of frontal boundaries will move east and south from the Plains to the Gulf and Atlantic coastlines. These boundaries will focus showers and thunderstorms through the weekend, with scattered severe thunderstorms from the Southern Plains and across the Gulf Coast states. Above normal temperatures are expected today in advance of a cold front that will drop into the area this afternoon. Showers and a few thunderstorms are possible along the front as it pushes to the south through this evening. Temperatures will return below normal in its wake Monday, while a wave of low pressure riding by to the south could bring rain to portions of the area. Frost or freeze conditions are possible west of the Blue Ridge Monday night, with dry and mild weather following for Tuesday.
A recent update to the Drought Monitor has maintained widespread D2 (Severe Drought) conditions to the region. Additionally, D3 (Extreme Drought) conditions are now in place along the I-64 corridor.
