Hurricane Isaias Synopsis
In late July of 2020, the National Hurricane Center began tracking a tropical wave that developed off the coast of Africa. This tropical wave would gradually move west towards the Caribbean, while gradually strengthening. This tropical wave was given the name Isaias when it was designated as a tropical storm at 11 PM on Wednesday July 29th. Isaias then took a northwest turn towards the Bahamas, while remaining just off of the east coast of Florida. There, it reached its peak intensity as a Category 1 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph, and a minimum central pressure of 987 mb. Weakening occurred as Isaias moved through the Bahamas, dropping back down to a strong tropical storm. Isaias then re-strengthened as it began to turn northward and move towards the North Carolina coastline, eventually reaching Category 1 hurricane status once again, with winds of 85 mph and a minimum central pressure of 988 mb. Isaias made landfall at Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina at 11:10 PM EDT on Monday August 3rd.
Isaias moved quickly north through the Mid-Atlantic, eventually reaching our forecast area early on Tuesday August 4th, while still retaining tropical storm status. Isaias brought significant impacts all up and down the East Coast from flooding, tornadoes and strong winds. In all, there were 46 confirmed tornadoes from South Carolina to Connecticut that were associated with Isaias. In our forecast area, we confirmed 3 tornadoes in lower southern MD. More information on those available is here. Flooding impacts were seen all up and down the East Coast, including central and southern Maryland in our forecast area. Several reports of flash flooding were recorded from St. Mary’s, Calvert, Charles, Baltimore, and Harford counties. Conditions were so bad in St. Mary’s county that our tornado damage survey team had to conduct the survey via helicopter due to the number of washed out roads and trees down across roadways. Finally, there were several recorded tropical storm force wind gusts across southern Maryland, as well as in the Chesapeake Bay and lower to middle tidal Potomac River. Damage estimates at this time, as reported be the Maryland Emergency Management Agency (MEMA), were just over $22 million in damages across the state.
Below is a summary of all impacts associated with Isaias in the NWS Baltimore/Washington Forecast Area:
