1969: Early nighttime severe thunderstorm winds caused an estimated $1M property damage in Lubbock and injured 20 persons.
Six persons required hospitalization; 14 others were treated and released from area hospitals. Several of the injuries occurred when high winds toppled five trailer homes on North University Ave and North Quirt Ave. Except for those persons in trailer homes, the remaining injuries were from flying glass or debris. Two motels were partially unroofed and the Ramada Inn north of the city had 26 upstairs units unroofed and there was water damage to 50 units. Four cotton warehouses at the Service Compress and Warehouse at 2001 N Gary St were heavily damaged or destroyed. About 100 utility poles were knocked down along with 1.5 miles of power line. One light aircraft was overturned at the municipal airport. Wind gusts at the Weather Bureau Office reached 74 mph at 9:36 PM. |
