Severe Thunderstorm Threat From the Central Plains to the Northeast; Extreme HeatRisk for the East Coast

Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible from the central Plains to the Northeast through this evening. Widespread damaging winds are the primary threat but hail and a tornado or two is also possible. The National Weather Service in Louisville, KY, is welcoming a new meteorologist to our office, Chase Graham! Chase comes to us from North Carolina, and he earned a Masters Degree from NC State. His thesis was on the verification of high resolution models and how they handle high shear and low instability environments, a common feature in our region, especially in the winter time. With his studies at UNC Asheville, Chase worked on the VORTEX-SE field project conducting ground-based and aerial damage surveys to better understand the connections built and natural environments, and how this affects the level of tornado damage in a community. We are excited to see how Chase uses his skills to forecast for southern IN and central KY.
