Below Normal Temperatures and Above Normal Precipitation for both North Platte and Valentine
An active weather pattern continued into May 2016 across western
and north central Nebraska. Temperatures were below normal across
western and north central Nebraska which was a result of the wet
conditions which occurred during the month of May.
For North Platte, the average daily mean temperature for the month of
May was 56.5 degrees which was 1.4 degrees below the normal of 57.9
degrees. The average daily high temperature for May was 69.7 degrees
which was 2.0 degrees below the normal of 71.7 degrees. The average
daily low temperature for the month was 43.3 degrees which was 0.8
degrees below the normal of 44.1 degrees. No daily temperature records
were set during the month of May at North Platte.
For Valentine, the average daily mean temperature for the month of
May was 57.2 degrees which was 0.4 degrees below the normal of 57.6
degrees. The average daily high temperature for May was 71.2 degrees
which was 0.3 degrees above the normal of 70.9 degrees. The average
daily low temperature for the month was 43.2 degrees which was 1.1
degrees below the normal of 44.3 degrees. No daily temperature records
were set during the month of May at Valentine.
At Lee Bird Field in North Platte, precipitation for May totaled
3.90 inches which was 0.62 inches above the normal of 3.28 inches. No
snowfall fell during the month of May. For the winter season of
2015/16, total snowfall was 32.4 inches which was 3.9 inches above
the normal of 28.5 inches. No daily precipitation records were set
during the month of May for North Platte.
At Miller field in Valentine, precipitation for May totaled 7.09
inches which was 3.96 inches above the normal of 3.13 inches. The
7.09 inch total made May 2016 the fourth wettest May on record for
Valentine. One daily precipitation record was set during the month
for Valentine. On the 22nd 3.87 inches of rain fell at Miller Field
breaking the record of 2.00 inches set previously in 1927. No snowfall
fell during the month of May in Valentine. For the winter season of
2015/16, total snowfall was 38.2 inches which was 4.9 inches above the
normal of 33.3 inches.
