National Weather Service United States Department of Commerce

Red Flag Program

The purpose of the Fire Weather Watch and Red Flag Warning is to alert the public and land management agencies of developing weather conditions that, when combined with critically dry wild land fuels, could lead to dangerous wildfires.

Criteria for Red Flag Events in the Forecast Area

Fire Weather Watches/Red Flag Warnings are issued when the combination of dry fuels and weather conditions are such that extreme fire behavior or ignition is occurring or is expected to occur. Forecasters will coordinate with local fire and land managers (State Forestry Commissions/US Forest Service) through the Interagency Coordination Centers of Louisiana, Arkansas and Mississippi to discuss the issuance of a Fire Weather Watch or Red Flag Warning. In addition, issuing offices should coordinate with adjacent weather offices. Below are some of the criteria to consider when evaluating:

For Mississippi Red Flag/Fire Weather Watch Conditions:

1.     Relative Humidity less or equal to 25%

2.     20 foot wind speed of greater or equal to 15 mph

For Louisiana Red Flag/Fire Weather Watch Conditions

1.     Relative Humidity less than 25%

2.     Wind speed of greater than or equal to 14 mph

3.   Keetch-Byram Drought Indices of greater than 700

For Arkansas Red Flag/Fire Weather Watch Conditions

1.     Relative Humidity less than 25%

2.     20 foot wind speed of greater or equal to 14 mph

3.     Fuels critically dry, 10 hour fuels less than 10%

.,.FIRE WEATHER WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT THROUGH FRIDAY EVENING…

A FIRE WEATHER WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT THROUGH FRIDAY EVENING

DURING THE PAST FOUR WEEKS…RAINFALL HAS BEEN VERY SPARSE ACROSS MUCH OF THE ARKLAMISS REGION. DUE  TO THE VERY DRY CONDITIONS…AREA FIRE AGENCIES IN SOUTHEAST ARKANSAS…NORTHEAST LOUISIANA AND  CENTRAL MISSISSIPPI HAVE INDICATED AN INCREASE IN FIRE DANGER AND FIRE ACTIVITY…AND  THEY DISCOURAGED OUTDOOR BURNING…AND MORE BANS ARE EXPECTED IN THE COMING WEEKS.

THE LOWEST RELATIVE HUMIDITY VALUES WILL BE AROUND 25 PERCENT THIS AFTERNOON…AND FROM 20 TO 25 PERCENT FRIDAY AFTERNOON. WINDS WILL BE FROM THE NORTH AT 10 TO 15 MPH TODAY AND 10 TO 20 MPH MPH ON FRIDAY…WITH SOME HIGHER GUSTS ON BOTH DAYS. A DRY COLD FRONT IS EXPECTED TO PUSH THROUGH THE REGION TONIGHT…AND THIS WILL ONLY REINFORCE THE DRY AND BREEZY CONDITIONS FOR FRIDAY  INTO THIS WEEKEND. IF FIRE DANGER CONDITIONS CONTINUE TO WORSEN…THEN RED FLAG WARNINGS MAY HAVE TO BE ISSUED.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

A FIRE WEATHER WATCH MEANS THAT CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS COULD OCCUR. LISTEN FOR LATER FORECASTS AND POSSIBLE REDFLAG WARNINGS.

FIRE DANGER STATEMENTS

The office will also issue Fire Danger Statements. This product is issued under rare circumstances of extremely dry or drought conditions for the entire or part of the region. Distribution will be over NOAA Weather Radio and Internet.

NWS JACKSON MS

...ELEVATED FIRE DANGER ACROSS THE ARKLAMISS REGION TODAY...

ACCORDING TO AREA FORESTRY COMMISSIONS AND THE US FOREST SERVICE,RECENT VERY DRY CONDITIONS HAVE MADE OUTDOOR BURNING INCREASINGLY HAZARDOUS. CONDITIONS ARE SUCH THAT A SPARK FROM EQUIPMENT, THE HEAT FROM A CATALYTIC CONVERTER, OR ANY HEAT SOURCE COULD START A GRASS OR BRUSH FIRE. GUSTY WINDS MAKE IT DIFFICULT TO CONTAIN BURNING DEBRIS OR TRASH AND COULD HINDER FIRE CONTAINMENT EFFORTS. THE COMBINATION OF DRY FINE FUELS, SUCH AS GRASS, AND LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITY HAVE RESULTED IN CONTINUED FIRE DANGER ACROSS THE ARKLAMISS REGION. MINIMUM RELATIVE HUMIDITY VALUES WILL RANGE FROM 25 TO 35 PERCENT THIS AFTERNOON. ACCOMPANIED BY SOUTHWEST WINDS AT 5 TO 10 MPH. THE DRY WEATHER WILL RESULT IN ELEVATED FIRE DANGER TODAY. RELATIVE HUMIDITY VALUES ARE EXPECTED TO INCREASE ON TUESDAY AS ADDITIONAL MOISTURE ENTERS THE REGION AHEAD OF AN APPROACHING COLD FRONT. THIS WILL REDUCE FIRE DANGER LEVELS. FIRES PLACE AREA FORESTRY COMMISSIONS, FIRE DEPARTMENTS, AND OTHER FIRE CONTROL AGENCIES IN LIFE THREATENING SITUATIONS, AND CAN ENDANGER COMMUNITIES. PLEASE USE CAUTION AND HELP PREVENT FOREST AND GRASS FIRES. AREA FORESTRY COMMISSIONS AND US FOREST SERVICE URGE THE PUBLIC TO COMPLY WITH AND STATEWIDE BURN BANS AND REFRAIN FROM ANY OUTDOOR BURNING. MISSISSIPPI AND LOUISIANA HAVE ISSUED STATEWIDE BURN BANS. ASHLEY AND CHICOT COUNTIES IN ARKANSAS ARE ALSO UNDER A LOCAL BURN BAN. WHEN BARBECUING, TAKE THE UTMOST CARE. DO NOT DUMP ASHES UNLESS YOU ARE CERTAIN THEY ARE COMPLETELY OUT. LIVE COALS CAN BURN FOR AS LONG AS ONE OR TWO DAYS AFTER BEING USED.
