NOUS44 KJAN 011635 PNSJAN PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE JACKSON MS 1130 AM CDT TUE JUL 1 2003 ...TROPICAL STORM BILL BROUGHT HEAVY RAIN AND GUSTY WINDS TO SOUTHEASTERN MISSISSIPPI... TROPICAL STORM BILL MADE LANDFALL AROUND 2 PM MONDAY IN TERREBONNE PARISH LOUISIANA...SOUTHWEST OF HOUMA. THE STORM WEAKENED INTO A TROPICAL DEPRESSION DURING THE EVENING AS IT CROSSED SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA. THE DEPRESSION ENTERED THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE JACKSON COUNTY WARNING AREA AROUND 1100 PM CDT IN SOUTHERN MARION COUNTY. THE DEPRESSION THEN PROCEEDED ACROSS LAMAR...FORREST...JONES...AND CLARKE COUNTIES BETWEEN MIDNIGHT AND 500 AM CDT THIS MORNING. OVER THE PAST COUPLE OF DAYS...THE HIGHEST OBSERVED RAINFALL WAS 7.66 INCHES AT A COOPERATIVE OBSERVER SITE 5 MILES SOUTHWEST OF HATTIESBURG. MOST OF THE RAIN FELL EAST OF THE INTERSTATE 55 CORRIDOR...WITH LITTLE IF ANY RAIN WEST OF THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER. WINDS DID NOT REACH TROPICAL STORM FORCE AS FAR INLAND AS THE HATTIESBURG AND COLUMBIA AREAS. HOWEVER...WITH WIND GUSTS OF 30 TO 40 MPH AND SATURATED GROUNDS...THERE WERE REPORTS OF SHALLOW ROOTED TREES DOWN OVER PORTIONS OF SOUTHEAST MISSISSIPPI.
