Severe Weather Event - November 10-11, 2002

 

...ALL TIMES AND DAMAGE DESCRIPTIONS IN THIS STATEMENT ARE 
PRELIMINARY...

...CENTRAL LOWNDES COUNTY...
THIS TORNADO INITIALLY DEVELOPED 3 MILES SOUTHEAST OF ARTESIA AT 
AROUND 708 PM...AND MOVED 22 MILES NORTHEAST AND MOVED OUT OF 
MISSISSIPPI ABOUT 2 AND A HALF MILES SOUTHEAST OF STEENS ABOUT 730 
PM. THE TORNADO WAS 440 YARDS AT ITS WIDEST POINT. THE WORST DAMAGE 
OCCURRED IN COLUMBUS AROUND 720 PM. MAJOR DAMAGE OCCURRED AT THE 
MISSISSIPPI UNIVERSITY FOR WOMEN CAMPUS...AND TO MANY HOUSING 
DEVELOPMENTS IN THE SOUTHERN PART OF COLUMBUS. A NUMBER OF INJURIES 
ALSO OCCURRED IN THE COLUMBUS AREA. THE PRELIMINARY DAMAGE RATING 
FOR THIS TORNADO WAS F3 ON THE FUJITA SCALE.

...NORTHERN WINSTON/NOXUBEE/SOUTHERN LOWNDES COUNTIES...
THIS TORNADO DEVELOPED 2 MILES NORTH NORTHWEST OF THE COMMUNITY OF 
WEBSTER AT 720 PM. IT TRAVELED 12 AND A HALF MILES...EXITING 
WINSTON COUNTY 1 MILE SOUTH OF WINSTON AROUND 734 PM. THE TORNADO 
TRACKED ACROSS EXTREME NORTHWEST NOXUBEE COUNTY FOR AROUND 7 MILES 
AND MOVED INTO EXTREME SOUTHEAST OKTIBBEHA COUNTY AROUND 741 PM. THE 
STORM THEN MOVED INTO SOUTHWEST LOWNDES COUNTY 2 MILES WEST OF 
CRAWFORD AT APPROXIMATELY 745 PM. THE TORNADO TRACKED THROUGH 
LOWNDES COUNTY FOR 27 MILES...EXITING MISSISSIPPI 3 MILES EAST 
NORTHEAST OF NEW HOPE ABOUT 815 PM. ONE FATALITY OCCURRED WITH THIS 
STORM NEAR CRAWFORD. THE TORNADO WAS 400 YARDS WIDE AT ITS WIDEST 
POINT. THE PRELIMINARY DAMAGE RATING FOR THIS TORNADO WAS F1 ON THE 
FUJITA SCALE.

...LEAKE/ATTALA COUNTIES...
THIS TORNADO APPEARS TO HAVE INITIALLY DEVELOPED NEAR THE 
MADISON...ATTALA COUNTY LINE ABOUT 5 MILES NORTHEAST OF CAMERON JUST 
BEFORE 730 PM. THE STORM MOVED EAST NORTHEAST INTO NORTHWEST LEAKE 
COUNTY...CAUSING DAMAGE TO A HOME AND A BARN...AND SNAPPING OR 
UPROOTING HUNDREDS OF TREES. THE TORNADO THEN CROSSED BACK INTO 
ATTALA COUNTY BEFORE DISSIPATING ABOUT 7 MILES SOUTH OF KOSCIUSKO AT 
AROUND 740 PM. THIS TORNADO WAS ABOUT 1000 YARDS WIDE AT ITS WIDEST 
POINT...AND ON THE GROUND FOR ABOUT 10 MILES. THE PRELIMINARY DAMAGE 
RATING FOR THIS TORNADO WAS F2.

...WINSTON COUNTY...
THIS TORNADO LOOKS TO HAVE INITIALLY DEVELOPED ABOUT 6 MILES SOUTH 
OF LOUISVILLE AT ABOUT 820 PM. THE TORNADO MOVED EAST 
NORTHEAST...COMPLETELY DESTROYING TWO MOBILE HOMES AND DAMAGING 
SEVERAL OTHER HOMES AND OUTBUILDINGS. NUMEROUS TREES WERE ALSO 
SNAPPED AND UPROOTED. THE TORNADO DISSIPATED APPROXIMATELY 12 MILES 
EAST OF LOUISVILLE AROUND 840 PM. THIS TORNADO WAS ABOUT 500 YARDS 
AT ITS WIDEST POINT...AND ON THE GROUND FOR APPROXIMATELY 15 MILES. 
THE PRELIMINARY DAMAGE RATING FOR THIS TORNADO WAS F1.
