Hawaiʻi Tsunami Awareness Month > Hawaiʻi Tsunami Awareness Month - April 2025
APRIL is Tsunami Awareness Month in Hawaiʻi !
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the November 29, 1975 Kalapana earthquake and tsunami. Two persons died from the local tsunami that hit the campground at Halape minutes after the early morning M7.2 Kalapana earthquake. The ground dropped 12 feet and runups up to 47 feet were measured. Read firsthand accounts of the terrifying tsunami (Michael Stearns) (Donnie Cruz). The tsunami resulted in the establishment of the Hawai‘i State Local Tsunami Warning System, with warnings provided by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC).
This Hawai‘i Tsunami Preparedness Video was updated in 2025.
Topics covered are: 1) tsunami science; 2) local, distant and extreme tsunamis and evacuation zones; 3) tsunami alerts through the County emergency notification apps, the Statewide Emergency Alert System (all-hazard outdoorwarning sirens, the Wireless Emergency Alert System and the local media); and 4) family emergency preparedness, such as having an evacuation kit and a plan whether you are at home, work or school.
