Severe Weather on the South Plains: 2 May - 5 May 2006

An outbreak of severe thunderstorms occurred across portions of the Texas South Plains and Rolling Plains from Tuesday, May 2nd to Friday, May 5th, 2006. These storms produced large hail up to the size of baseballs, tornadoes, and straight-line wind gusts - all of which caused considerable damage in various locations across the area. The communities of Anton in Hockley County (on 3 May) and Lake Alan Henry in Garza County (on 5 May) were particularly hard hit.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Lubbock dispatched damage survey teams to assess the reports of damage from the severe storms on 3 May and 5 May. Please click on the following links below to view the summary and pictures from each damage survey.

A total of 76 warnings (66 severe thunderstorm and 10 tornado) were issued by the Lubbock office during the four days for our 24-county warning area. The map below shows the distribution of the warnings.

The thunderstorms also brought beneficial rain to portions of the area. But in typical fashion, the rainfall was distributed in a "hit-or-miss" pattern - with a general wetter trend apparent as one moves from northwest to southeast.
