Shelby County Airport Damage
June 11, 2012

A line of thunderstorms moved across Central Alabama during the late afternoon and into the evening hours. Numerous Severe Thunderstorm Warnings were issued and many locations received brief wind gusts of 60 mph or more.

One of these locations was the Shelby County Airport which is located next to the Birmingham National Weather Service Forecast Office. The official observatioanl equipment measured a wind gust of 43 mph. It was probable that the winds were higher just yards from the measuring equipment. The damage indicators suggest localized winds of 60 to 65 mph.

The Shelby County Airport lost 2 hangers. Several planes were damaged. One plane was overturned on the taxiway with the pilot in the plane. The FBO building had large doors on both sides of the building blown down.
