Severe Weather of April 6th and 7th, 2016

Event Summary for Central Alabama

A cold front moved across the western Ohio Valley, the Tennessee Valley, and the Deep South on April 6th and April 7th. This system eventually moved into the Mid Atlantic and Northeast on April 7th. Several damaging wind and large hail reports were received in association with this system. In addition, several tornadoes occurred and were mainly limited to South Central Alabama and Southwest Georgia.

This cold front moved across Central Alabama Wednesday evening into early Thursday morning. Some wind gusts in the 45 to 60 mph range caused minor damage and quarter size hail or less occurred. The airmass across portions of South Central Alabama, briefly became supportive of stronger storms and tornadoes during the overnight hours. Organized storms held together farther south than originally aniticpated and the shear was stronger. Surface dew points were able to jump into the lower 60s, even without the aide of a nearby surface low. This resulted in a short period where several tornadoes occurred.

The information contained below is the individual tornado events that occurred. The data is PRELIMINARY and may be subject to change.
