Flooding in Talladega County on January 30, 2013

In addition to the wind and tornado damage in Central Alabama, there were also isolated reports of flash and areal flooding in numerous counties. NWS hydrologists surveyed these areas and confirmed that there was a flash flooding event in Talladega and areal flood events in Childersburg and Pell City. All of these instances occurred after 2 to 3 inches of rain fell in a short period of time.

In Talladega, in the vicinity of both Isbell Circle and Scott Street, small creeks and ditches carried rapidly flowing water from runoff through these areas. This produced a situation in which the water levels rose very quickly and became dangerous due to high flow velocity.

In Childersburg, the area where the flooding occurred was very flat with no significant creeks or streams to carry water into or out of the area. The flooding in these areas was due primarily to ponding because of poor drainage leaving the water no place to go.
