A line of severe thunderstorms ahead of the cold front sped across central Indiana during the morning. Below are radar images of the line at approximately 8:30, 9:30, and 10:30 AM EDT.
A brief tornado touchdown was confirmed about two and a half miles east of downtown Kokomo near County Roads 300 East and 50 North. One home had significant damage and 6 other structures had minor roof or fence damage. This tornado has been rated an EF0 (wind speeds between 65 and 85 mph).
Below is a radar image taken at 9:53 AM
Some of the damage is pictured below.
In addition, significant damage was observed in and near Wilkinson in Hancock County. The NWS ground survey has determined that both tornado and straight line wind damage occurred with estimated wind speeds of up to 80 mph. A brief EF0 tornado touched down 2.4 miles northwest of Wilkinson on Nashville Rd. Some of the most significant damage occurred to a hog barn that was under construction near the intersection of County Roads 1100 North and 1100 East. Injuries occurred to two workers who were on stilts constructing the ceiling in the unfinished hog barn when the storm moved across the area. One hog in the finished barn was also found injured and had to be put down.
Below are radar images taken at 10:22 AM EDT. The image on the left is reflectivity, while the image on the right is velocity. The velocity image indicates that nearly 80 mph winds were noted about 2000 ft above the ground:
Some of the damage from Hancock County is pictured below.
Significant damage was also observed in western Randolph County south and southeast of Parker City. The NWS damage survey has determined that this damage was caused by straight line winds, with estimated wind speeds of around 80 mph. Five buildings were damaged or destroyed. The most significant damage was a roof taken off a home and a garage picked up and moved off its foundation. Below is a radar image taken at about 11:00 AM EDT:
Some of the damage is pictured below.
