A damage survey team from the National Weather Service in Indianapolis has confirmed a tornado from last night’s storms in northern Rush County near the town of Mays. The tornado touched down at approximately 817 p.m. EDT, around one mile northwest of the town of Mays in northern Rush County . The tornado then tracked north east for approximately a half mile before lifting. The Rush County Emergency Management and Sheriff reported sighting the tornado Monday evening along with some flying debris.

“Signs of a tornado include evidence of rotation, or trees pointing toward the path of destruction,” said John Ogren, former Meteorologist in Charge with the Indianapolis NWS office. “There were some downed trees depicting weak convergence where the heavier damage occurred near Mays,” added Ogren.

Rush County Emergency Management Director, Nansi Custer, indicated two homes sustained minor roof damage with several other small outbuildings nearby being damaged or destroyed.

A Fujita Scale rating of F0 indicates an estimated wind speeds up to 72 mph, and damage from a tornado of this intensity is classified as slight.

The tornado has been assigned a rating of F0 on the Fujita tornado scale, with maximum winds estimated near 70 mph.

At its widest point, the tornado was approximately 75 yards wide and 0.61 miles long.
