Details:

  1. 12/18/1957:  This strong tornado affected areas between Newton and Ste Marie.  Four farms were damaged, and one barn was destroyed.
  2. 3/6/1961:  This strong tornado originally touched down southeast of Effingham, and moved southeast through Newton.  It destroyed a gas station and a farm house, and damaged a drive-in theater.  A trailer was overturned near Newton, injuring 3 people.
  3. 5/30/1974:   Touched down 5 miles south of Newton, causing minor property damage.
  4. 8/10/1974:  This tornado destroyed a church, sweeping away the debris, at Island Grove.
  5. 3/20/1976:  Touched down 4 miles west-northwest of West Liberty, and lifted 2 miles north of town.  A storage shed north of town was destroyed.
  6. 4/12/1984:  This tornado touched down 4 miles northwest of Newton, destroying a barn and 3 grain bins, and damaging a house.
  7. 5/19/1989:  Brief touchdown 4 miles south of Dieterich, destroying 2 farm buildings.
  8. 6/2/1990:  This 13-mile tornado track extended from the north edge of Newton Lake, to Newton, to the south side of Hunt City.  In Newton, 7 homes were destroyed, and two more were destroyed 5 miles northeast of town.
  9. 6/2/1990:  This tornado touched down in far eastern Jasper County, about 3 miles southwest of Oblong, before moving into Crawford County.
  10. 5/8/1996:  This tornado followed an intermittent 11 mile path, touching down near Falmouth and lifting 4 miles east-southeast of Willow Hill.  A shed and trailer were destroyed, with several trees damaged.
  11. 6/1/1999:  Touched down 5 miles west of Rose Hill, and was on the ground for 1 mile. 
  12. 5/10/2003:  Touched down 3 miles east of Wheeler, and moved northeast for 2 miles.  Two houses and a couple of sheds were damaged.
  13. 11/15/2005:  This tornado passed west and north of Newton.
  14. 4/16/2006:  This tornado formed along the Effingham County line and dissipated just west of Wheeler.
  15. 11/17/2013:  This was part of a large tornado outbreak that occurred in Illinois.  The tornado touched down on the northwest side of West Liberty and moved northeast. Click here for more details.

  17. 8/5/2023:  Brief touchdown in an open field 3 miles northeast of Willow Hill, causing no damage.
