June Precipitation Highlights:

  • Rainfall was well below normal over central and southeast Illinois this month.  Higher totals fell to the north and south of the area, as storm systems tended to split or dissipate as they approached central Illinois.  While almost the entire area saw a rainfall deficit, the most significant departure from normal occurred from west central Illinois, east near the I-72 corridor.  Less than one inch of rain fell in these areas, putting the monthly deficit between 3 and 4 inches.  Lincoln saw its 7th driest June on record, with 0.95".  This has pushed a portion of central and southeast Illinois towards drought, with "abnormally dry" conditions noted on the latest U.S. Drought Monitor

June Temperature Highlights:

  • Temperatures were not far from normal, with most locations averaging around 1 degree above normal for the monthly average.  The most significant stretch of heat was from the 11th-15th, with widespread highs in the low to mid 90s.  Springfield tied record highs on the 12th and 13th at 95 degrees.

June Weather Event Highlights:

  • Only a few days saw severe weather this month, with the most widespread events on the 14th and 17th.
    • Scattered strong to severe thunderstorms impacted central Illinois during the afternoon and evening of June 14th.  Some of the storms produced wind gusts of 60-70 mph and hail as large as quarters.  The most significant wind damage occurred from Peoria Heights eastward to Metamora in Woodford County where numerous trees were blown down.  Trees were also blown down in Rushville in Schuyler County, as well as across portions of Shelby County, and in Ludlow in northern Champaign County.  Quarter-sized hail was observed near Fairview in Fulton County and in Hoopeston in Vermilion County.

    • An approaching cold front triggered scattered severe thunderstorms across portions of central and southeast Illinois from the evening of June 17th into the early morning of June 18th. Thunderstorm cells first impacted Stark and Marshall counties, then spread southeastward across Peoria, Woodford and northern McLean counties, bringing strong winds and torrential rainfall.  Trees were blown down in Toulon and Wyoming in Stark County, while a garage was leveled and a barn was damaged northwest of Roanoke in Woodford County.  Further southeast, a 75 mph wind gust was recorded in Lexington in northern McLean County.  In addition to the wind, rainfall rates of over 4 inches per hour caused localized flash flooding.  Numerous county roads were flooded, while significant urban flooding occurred on the north side of Peoria and in Normal.  A separate area of storms developed over west central Illinois and spread eastward toward Springfield, dropping quarter-sized hail in Beardstown in Cass County and blowing trees down on the Cass/Morgan County border.  One final surge of convection that developed later in the evening near St. Louis pushed into southeast Illinois between 3 and 4 am.  These cells produced a 68 mph wind gust at the Flora Airport and downed a few trees and powerlines in Flora and in the towns of Watson and Mason in southern Effingham counties.
