January 2022 Precipitation Highlights:

  • January saw well below normal precipitation across central and southeast IL with Galesburg and Normal just under a half inch. Many areas north of I-70 only had between a half and 1 inch of precipitation which was 1 to 2 inches below normal for the month. Areas from I-70 south had 1.50 to 2.25 inches of precipitation but still 1 to 1.5 inches below normal. Snowfall was also below normal as has been the case past few months, with Paris, Effingham and Olney only having around a half inch of snow. Though Galesburg with 9 inches of snow was at their normal Jan snowfall, while Canton also with 9 inches of snow was 3 inches above normal for the month.

January 2022 Temperature Highlights:

  • Temperatures across central Illinois were 2 to 5 degrees below normal.  Peoria, Lincoln, Charleston and Galesburg were around 5 degrees colder than normal, while Paris was just 1 degree colder than normal.  Jan 6-7th was the coldest air of the month and so far this winter with highs in the teens, with lows in the single digits below zero north of I-72.

February 2022 Look Ahead:

  • The official February 2022 outlooks from NOAA's Climate Predication center show warmer than normal temperatures favored east of I-55 and equal chances of above and below normal temperatures from I-55 west. Wetter than normal precipitation favored for central & southeast IL.
