Fast Facts:

  • Snowfall of 4 to 6 inches fell across a narrow corridor of central Illinois on Easter Sunday, April 1. Some local totals of 6 to 8 inches were reported west of Lincoln to near the Mississippi River. 
  • The most snow ever to fall on Easter was on April 4, 1920, when 6 to 10 inches fell in an area from near Quincy northeast to southern Lake Michigan. 
  • Clearing skies and the fresh snow cover resulted in rare April single digit and sub-zero temperatures in a few areas on Monday morning, April 2.

Statistics:

The date of Easter varies between March 22nd and April 25th, and is dependent on the date of the full moon that follows the vernal equinox. Despite these varying dates, snowfall is not very common on Easter. Some facts about Easter snow:

Springfield (snowfall records begin in 1893):

  • Only 7 Easters have seen measurable snowfall. The last occurrence was in 2008 (0.2 inches on March 23rd).
  • The heaviest amount was 4.7 inches on April 4, 1920. 

Peoria (snowfall records began in 1883):

  • There have been 5 Easters with measurable snowfall. The last was April 3, 1983 with 0.2 inches (although flurries were reported in 2008, on March 20th).
  • The heaviest snowfall was 4.6 inches on April 4, 1920.
