THE NWS IN HUNTSVILLE, IN CONJUNCTION WITH EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT OFFICIALS, CONDUCTED DAMAGE SURVEYS ACROSS SEVERAL IMPACTED AREAS FROM THE MARCH 18TH 2013 SEVERE WEATHER EVENT. THE FOLLOWING IS THE PRELIMINARY FINDINGS FROM SURVEYS CONDUCTED IN PORTIONS OF MARSHALL...DEKALB...AND CULLMAN COUNTIES. .LEIGHTON TORNADO... RATING: EF-0 ESTIMATED PEAK WIND: 85 MPH PATH LENGTH /STATUTE/: 1.6 MILES PATH WIDTH /MAXIMUM/: 100 YARDS FATALITIES: NONE INJURIES: NONE START DATE: 3/18/13 START TIME: 2:10 PM CDT /1910 UTC/ START LOCATION: JUST NW OF HATTON SCHOOL RD/6TH ST START LAT/LON: 34.7293 / -87.4954 END DATE: 3/18/13 END TIME: 2:13 PM CDT /1913 UTC/ END LOCATION: NEAR SHAW RD/6TH ST INTERSECTION END LAT/LON: 34.7281 / -87.4673 SURVEY SUMMARY: A WEAK/SHORT-LIVED TORNADO EMBEDDED WITHIN A QUASI-LINEAR CONVECTIVE SYSTEM...TOUCHED DOWN ABOUT 2 MILES NORTHWEST OF THE TOWN OF LEIGHTON...SNAPPING TREES NEAR THE INTERSECTION OF 6TH STREET AND HATTON SCHOOL ROAD. JUST TO THE EAST OF THIS LOCATION... MORE CONCENTRATED DAMAGE TO LARGE PINES /UPROOTED AND SNAPPED ABOUT HALFWAY DOWN/ OCCURRED...ALONG WITH MINOR STRUCTURAL/ROOF DAMAGE TO A RESIDENCE. A CAR PORT WAS LIFTED AND DESTROYED AND UNDERCARRIAGE FROM A SINGLE-WIDE MOBILE HOME WAS PULLED OUT AND THROWN INTO A NEARBY TREE. THE DAMAGE PATTERN AT THIS LOCATION SUGGESTED A CIRCULATION/TORNADO. THE TORNADO CONTINUED TO TRACK EAST... UPROOTING TREES IN AN OPEN FIELD AND ADDITIONAL LARGE CEDAR TREES WERE SEEN SNAPPED ALONG ITS PATH AT SHAW CEMETARY. THE TORNADO CONTINUED JUST A BIT FARTHER EAST BEFORE APPARENTLY LIFTING JUST EAST OF SHAW ROAD... JUST NORTH OF 6TH STREET. SOME SPORADIC INFLOW/THUNDERSTORM WIND DAMAGE WAS SEEN AROUND THIS NARROW TORNADO TRACK AS SEVERAL TREES WERE SNAPPED ON EITHER SIDE OF 6TH STREET HEADING TOWARD THE LAWRENCE COUNTY LINE EF SCALE: THE ENHANCED FUJITA SCALE CLASSIFIES TORNADOES INTO THE FOLLOWING CATEGORIES. RATING: EF-2 ESTIMATED PEAK WIND: 125 MPH PATH LENGTH /STATUTE/: 4.3 MILES PATH WIDTH /MAXIMUM/: 220 YARDS FATALITIES: 0 INJURIES: 7 /KILPATRICK COMMUNITY/ START DATE: 03/18/13 START TIME: 3:41 PM CDT /ESTIMATED BY RADAR/ START LOCATION: HAMBEY ROAD /MARSHALL COUNTY/ START LAT/LON: 34.2687 /-86.1326 END DATE: 03/18/13 END TIME: 3:47 PM CDT /ESTIMATED/ END LOCATION: INTERSECTION OF HWY 68/CR 113 END LAT/LON: 34.2692 / -86.059 SURVEY SUMMARY: A TORNADO TOUCHED DOWN ON HAMBEY ROAD JUST EAST OF MCVILLE ROAD IN MARSHALL COUNTY AND TRACKED EAST INTO DEKALB COUNTY. SEVERAL SOFTWOOD AND HARDWOOD TREES WERE EITHER UPROOTED OR SNAPPED ALONG HAMBEY ROAD. AS THE TORNADO MOVED EAST, SEVERAL WOODEN POWER POLES WERE SNAPPED. SEVERAL FARM BUILDINGS WERE DESTROYED WITH DEBRIS STREWN OVER 100 YARDS. ADDITIONAL TREE DAMAGE WAS NOTED ALONG COUNTY ROADS 381 AND 82. THE MOST SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE OF THIS PARTICULAR TORNADO EVENT OCCURRED IN THE KILPATRICK COMMUNITY ALONG COUNTY ROAD 479. VERY LARGE HARDWOOD TREES WERE SNAPPED NEAR THE BASE ALONG WITH NUMEROUS POWER POLES SNAPPED. SEVERAL MOBILE HOMES SUSTAINED SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE WITH AT LEAST TWO COMPLETELY DESTROYED. SEVERAL CONVENTIONAL HOMES SUSTAINED MINOR TO MODERATE EXTERIOR DAMAGE IN THIS AREA AS WELL. AT THIS LOCATION, THE TORNADO WAS AT ITS MAXIMUM WIDTH OF APPROXIMATELY 220 YARDS AND MAXIMUM ESTIMATED WINDS OF 125 MPH. THUS IS CONSISTENT WITH AN EF-2 RATING. THE APPROXIMATE PATH LENGTH OF THIS TORNADO WAS 4.3 MILES. THE TORNADO CONTINUED TO MOVE EAST AND DID SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO A LARGE LIVESTOCK BUILDING NEAR THE INTERSECTION OF HIGHWAYS 68 AND 168. THE CONVENIENCE STORE AT THAT POINT SUFFERED MINOR ROOF DAMAGE. THE TORNADO CONTINUED TO MOVE EAST NEARLY PARALLELING HIGHWAY 68. A CAR WASH SUSTAINED SIGNIFICANT STRUCTURAL DAMAGE. A MOBILE HOME WAS FLIPPED AND DESTROYED NEAR THE INTERSECTION OF HIGHWAY 68 AND COUNTY ROAD 9004. THE TORNADO NARROWED AND FINALLY LIFTED NEAR THE INTERSECTION OF HIGHWAY 68 AND COUNTY ROAD 113. RATING: EF-2 ESTIMATED PEAK WIND: 120 MPH PATH LENGTH /STATUTE/: 5.9 MILES PATH WIDTH /MAXIMUM/: 350 YARDS FATALITIES: NONE INJURIES: NONE START DATE: 3/18/13 START TIME: 3:43 CDT /ESTIMATED BY RADAR/ START LOCATION: CR 539 NORTH OF CR 50 START LAT/LON: 34.4630 / -85.9917 END DATE: 3/18/13 END TIME: 3:51 PM CDT /ESTIMATED/ END LOCATION: CR 72/TUMLIN ROAD END LAT/LON: 34.4725 / -85.8879 SURVEY SUMMARY: A TORNADO TOUCHED DOWN ALONG COUNTY ROAD 539 NORTH OF COUNTY ROAD 50 IN DEKALB COUNTY IN THE FYFFE AND SHILOH COMMUNITIES. MINOR TREE DAMAGE WAS NOTED IN THIS AREA. AN UNOCCUPIED CHICKEN HOUSE ALSO SUSTAINED DAMAGE. NEAR THE INTERSECTION OF COUNTY ROADS 50 AND 43, A RESTAURANT SUSTAINED ROOF DAMAGE AND A CARPORT WAS FLATTENED. FURTHER EAST ANOTHER LARGE FARM BUILDING SUSTAINED MAJOR DAMAGE. ALONG HWY 50 ADDITIONAL CHICKEN HOUSES WERE DAMAGED OR DESTROYED ALONG WITH TREES SNAPPED AND/OR UPROOTED. THE MOST SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE OF THIS EVENT OCCURRED ALONG TRAYLOR STREET JUST NORTH OF HIGHWAY 50/GROVE OAK ROAD. TWO LARGE, WELL CONSTRUCTED, FARM BUILDINGS WERE COMPLETELY DESTROYED. ONE OF THESE CONTAINED METAL TRUSSES AND THE POSTS WERE RIPPED OUT OF THE GROUND. DEBRIS WAS THROWN SEVERAL HUNDRED YARDS AND LARGE DEBRIS WAS EMBEDDED IN THE GROUND. A NEARBY HOME SUSTAINED MINOR STRUCTURAL DAMAGE. THE PATH WIDTH WAS MAXIMIZED AT 350 YARDS AT THIS POINT WITH WINDS ESTIMATED AT 120 MPH. THIS IS CONSISTENT WITH AN EF-2 RATING. THE TORNADO BEGAN TO NARROW AND WEAKEN AS IT MOVED FURTHER EAST AS IT CROSSED COUNTY ROADS 523 AND 578. THE TORNADO LIFTED NEAR COUNTY ROAD 72/TUMLIN ROAD NORTH OF HIGHWAY 75. THE APPROXIMATE PATH LENGTH OF THIS TORNADO WAS 5.9 MILES. EF SCALE: THE ENHANCED FUJITA SCALE CLASSIFIES TORNADOES INTO THE FOLLOWING CATEGORIES. A BRICK BUILDING SUSTAINED SIGNIFICANT ROOF DAMAGE AT THE INTERSECTION OF HWY 431 AND MATHIS MILL ROAD. A LARGE SECTION OF THE ROOF WAS LIFTED AND PEELED OFF. WOODEN POWER POLES WERE SNAPPED IN THIS LOCATION AND A GAS STATION SIGN WAS DESTROYED. DEBRIS WAS STREWN WELL INTO HWY 431. ON NORTH SIDE OF THE ROAD AT THE INTERSECTION OF HIGHLAND AVENUE, A BARBECUE RESTAURANT SUSTAINED MAJOR DAMAGE. ADDITIONAL BUILDING HAD ROOF DAMAGE AND A SIGN WAS HEAVILY DAMAGED. ALONG 45TH STREET, ADJACENT TO THE HIGH SCHOOL AN ENTIRE ROW OF WOODEN POWER POLES WERE SNAPPED. THE ATHLETIC FACILITIES AT THE SCHOOL SUSTAINED DAMAGE TO FENCING, SIGNAGE, AND ROOFING. JUST TO THE EAST OF THE SCHOOL, A MANUFACTURING FACILITY SUSTAINED SIGNIFICANT ROOF AND INTERIOR WATER DAMAGE. A METAL BUILDING ALSO HAD COMPLETE WALL COLLAPSE. THE SURROUNDING AREA ALSO HAD NUMEROUS TREES SNAPPED OR UPROOTED. DAMAGE IN THIS AREA WAS CONSISTENT WITH STRAIGHTLINE WINDS OF 90 TO 105 MPH. THE TORNADO INITIALLY TOUCHED DOWN JUST EAST OF US HWY 431 IN BOAZ /MARSHALL COUNTY/ JUST SOUTH OF BRUCE ROAD WITH SOME MINOR STRUCTURAL DAMAGE TO BUSINESSES ALONG HWY 431. THE TORNADO TRACKED EAST-SOUTHEAST CROSSING MCVILLE ROAD AND AL HWY 168 CAUSING MINOR TREE DAMAGE. THE TORNADO INTENSIFIED AND WIDENED TO 300 YARDS AS IT CROSSED BETHSAIDA ROAD...UPROOTING AND SNAPPING NUMEROUS TREES AS IT APPROACHED ALEWINE ROAD...JUST NORTH OF ELLIS ROAD. THE TORNADO THEN CONTINUED ON ITS TRACK INTO ETOWAH COUNTY ABOUT A HALF OF A MILE WEST OF OAK DRIVE WHERE IT SNAPPED AND UPROOTED SEVERAL PINE TREES. FROM THERE IT MOVED TO THE EAST AND CROSSED BROADWELL ROAD AND OVERTURNED A TRACTOR TRAILER AND A CAMPER. THE TORNADO CONTINUED EASTWARD...SNAPPING AND UPROOTING TREES ALONG THE PATH. SEVERAL BARNS AND SMALL OUTBUILDINGS SUSTAINED ROOF DAMAGE. AS THE TORNADO CROSSED CHUMLEY ROAD...TWO MOBILE HOMES WERE OVERTURNED WHILE MORE TREES WERE UPROOTED. THE MOST EXTENSIVE DAMAGE OCCURRED AS THE TORNADO APPROACHED ROWEN ROAD. A MOBILE HOME WAS LIFTED AND OVERTURNED LEAVING ONE PERSON SERIOUSLY INJURED AND TWO OTHERS WITH MINOR INJURIES. IN THIS SAME AREA...TWO ADDITIONAL MOBILE HOMES WERE DESTROYED. AS THE TORNADO CROSSED BROW ROAD...A ONE STORY BRICK HOME HAD ONE THIRD OF ITS ROOF REMOVED AND WIND BLOWN DEBRIS WAS OBSERVED ON ALL FOUR SIDES OF THE HOME. THE TORNADO CONTINUED FURTHER EAST FOR APPROXIMATELY 300 YARDS BEFORE DISSIPATING AS IT TRACKED UP THE WESTERN SIDE OF THE APPALACHIANS.
