January 10, 2021 Winter Storm
A complex low pressure system moved across Southeast Texas on Sunday, January 10th bringing the first measurable snow to parts of the region in over three years. Generally around 4 to 6 inches of snow fell in portions of Burleson, Brazos, Madison, and Houston counties. A trace to 3 inches fell in portions of Washingston, Grimes, Walker, and Trinity Counties. The highest snow report received was 8.5 inches in northern Madison County just south of Normangee. A wintry mix of rain and sleet was reported as far south as the City of Houston and Sugarland.

Radar
Dual Polarization radar data is vital is determining where rain, sleet, or snow is falling. It is hard to tell the difference where rain or snow is falling just using Base Reflectivity, but that distinction becomes much clearer when using Correlation Coefficient (CC). Correlation coefficient provides a measure of the consistency of the shapes and sizes of targets within the radar beam. A higher value shows a higher consistency in the size and shape of radar targets (the red color), while a lower value indicates greater variability in shapes and sizes (blues, greens, yellows). Where the radar is picking up all rain or all snow, then CC shows up red, but where there is mixing between the two precipitation types, CC turns yellow or green.
