Severe Weather Outbreak (April 2-3)

During the late evening and overnight hours of April 2-3, 2024, strong to severe thunderstorms impacted parts of north and central Georgia. This was part of a larger storm system that affected a good portion of the eastern United States. The storms were able to evolve in an environment that become increasingly favorable for
tornadoes Tuesday night (April 2nd) into early Wednesday morning (April 3rd). One such storm rapidly intensified as it moved into Rockdale County, about 18 miles southeast of downtown Atlanta. The storm produced an EF-2 tornado. Additional tornadoes occurred in central Georgia overnight, along with pockets of straight-line
wind damage.

The May climate outlook is below.

May Outlook

Based on the Climate Prediction Center's outlook for May, North Georgia has a 33-40% chance of above normal temperatures while central Georgia has a 40-50% chance above normal temperatures. North Georgia has a 33% to 40% chance of above normal precipitation while northeast Georgia has equal chances.
