How to Use the New NWS Radar Display

The NWS radar display https://radar.weather.gov/ has been implemented as of Dec 17th, 2020!

The display has many options, and may take some time to become familiar with it. This is a short tutorial on how to use the interface. See the following images for tips, and read on for more details and familiarization exercises/procedures.

Here is a link to a ~15 minute video stepping you through most of the tips below: https://youtu.be/5Bcq_t_SvG8

There is also an FAQ page from the folks who developed the new radar interface.

If you wish to e:mail the developers, you may use this e:mail address: nws.radarfeedback@noaa.gov.

change to single radar

View different radar data for a single radar site:

  1. Click on the second down-arrow on the top-left -- not the arrow which is directly next to the Radar Site Identifier (KCCX, KPBZ, etc.). This arrow usually has a label of "BREF.RAW" = Super Resolution Base Reflectivity, raw/unfiltered)
  2. Select the type of image/data you wish (ex. "Super Resolution Base Velocity")
  3. The date/time of the most recent image is displayed at the bottom-left next to the loop/play arrow.

View more options in single-radar mode:

  1. Click on the triple dots (the "more" button) to the right of the Radar ID/data type/Alert summary
  2. Select from the options there:
    1. Weather Hazard / Warning Overlay (ON /OFF)
    2. Transparency ON/OFF:
      1. OFF makes it easier to read the data,
      2. ON makes it easier to see the map background and tell where the radar echoes are (see towns, roads, etc.)
    3. Ability to select a different single radar site:
      1. Turn OFF to prevent accidentally changing to a different radar site when clicking on the map
      2. ON leaves the blue/purple dots on the map to be able to change your view to a new radar site
        • Caution! Clicking once on the radar image/map might unintentionally send you to a different radar site. To pan around, hold the mouse button down.

Go back to the National Radar Mosaic:

  1. Click the two-screen icon (at the far top-left) to go back to "Select View"
  2. Choose “National Radar Mosaic” (CREF.RAW)
  3. You may also choose from a few other radar data types in the mosaic view, eg. Raw Composite Base Reflectivity
  4. caution! Precipitation type (rain vs. snow, etc.) is based on the type of radar returns which are sampled at the height of the radar beam at that location, and may not accurately reflect the precipitation type occurring at the surface
