Severe Weather April 19, 2013

The National Weather Service in State College PA has confirmed straight line wind damage caused by a Microburst near Tremont in Schuylkill County Pennsylvania on April 19 2013 at 7:05 PM EDT. The estimated Maximum wind speed was 85 MPH. The maximum path width was 200 yds. The Path length was a half mile. There were no fatalities and no injuries.

Damage started on East Line Street near Good Spring Creek...then continued east for about one half mile to near the intersection of Routes 125 and 209. The downburst created a swath of sporadic wind damage including about 20 homes with roof and siding damage and knocking down approximately 15 trees. The majority of the significant damage was confined to areas along and near East Line Street. There was also evidence of a short-lived gustnado that occurred along the edge of the downburst swath...generally along the eastern end of Route 125.

For reference...
A microburst is a convective downdraft with an affected outflow area of less than 2 1/2 miles wide and peak winds lasting less than 5 minutes. Microbursts may induce dangerous horizontal/vertical wind shears...which can adversely affect aircraft performance and cause property damage. Straight-line winds are generally any wind that is not associated with rotation...used mainly to differentiate them from tornadic winds.
