A powerful storm system will continue to bring heavy mountain snow, rain, and high winds to the Pacific Northwest and northern California through midweek. Heavy rain and flash flooding potential exists across the central Gulf Coast over the next few days, including the Florida Panhandle. A Slight Risk (level 2 of 4) of excessive rainfall is in effect Tuesday. Read More >
Overview
A significant outbreak of severe weather occurred on the 6th of June. It began early in the morning (which is unusual for the Eastern United States - most times, we have to wait for the heating of the afternoon to fuel the storms), in Western Pennsylvania, and spread eastward into the Central and Eastern two-thirds of the State. Most of the severe reports were of downburst wind damage, with some large hail, as well. See the Summary Preliminary Storm Report for some of the details. A Storm Damage Survey was conducted Tuesday in Tioga County. An F0 tornado occurred at Hammond Lake. Read the results of the survey on the Public Information Statement. Another Storm Damage Survey was conducted Tuesday in Lycoming County. An F1 tornado occurred near Huntersville.
Hail Spike (Three-Body Scatter Spike or TBSS) on Storm over Northern Dauphin and Lebanon Counties - Produced Nickel sized hail. The elongated reflectivity pattern emanating radially outward from the center of the storm is an indication of the TBSS. Studies have shown this radar signature is typically associated with large hail and NWS meteorologists are trained to identify this signature for possible severe weather warnings. This was one of many TBSS's that day, all of which produced Penny to Golf-ball sized hail. | Satellite and Lightning Loop GIF | Radar GIF |
