The National Weather Service in Buffalo investigated storm-related
damage from a rotating thunderstorm within a line of storms that
affected the area southeast of Machias in Cattaraugus County on
April 15th. The National Weather Service storm survey team investigated
the damage in the area this morning and confirmed damage consistent
with an EF-0 tornado with estimated peak winds of 75 mph.

The line of storms originally moved off of Lake Erie traveling east
at 50 mph. It passed through Cherry Creek, NY and Leon, NY with numerous
reports of trees and wires down. As the storm moved across Cattaraugus
County, a mid-level mesocyclone began to intensify east of U.S. Route
219 and quickly intensified southeast of Machias. The mesocyclone was
short-lived but persistent enough to assist in tornadogenesis.

Damage from the tornado began shortly after the intersection of Tug
Hill Road and Gulf Hill Road where a mix of several hardwood and softwood
trees were uprooted in a distinctly non-linear manner. Minor
damage occurred to the primary residence on the property where a
window was blown out of its upper most story. Additionally, a secondary
residence lost a few roof shingles. Uprooted tree damage along with
large snapped tree branches were observed less than 0.2 miles east
of the main damage, leading to an approximate path length of
0.17 miles.

The National Weather Service extends our sincere thanks to
Cattaraugus Emergency Services for their assistance with today`s survey.
