Winter 2010/2011 across Deep South Texas was true to fickle form. While conditions averaged out warm and dry for most areas on average, there were several notable swings of temperature. After pronounced drying continued through the last three months of 2010, and into early January 2011 when a significant wildfire burned thousands of acres on the King Ranch. The following week, change was afoot as the first significant cold and damp weather of the winter arrived for most of the week of January 10th. The cool snap, combined with a brief flirtation with a burst of upper level energy moving out of northern Mexico through south central Texas, activated a coastal front by mid month, producing a stripe of more than 3 inches of rain along the Highway 77 corridor. February began frigid, with the first week of frozen weather culminating in an ice storm on the 3rd and 4th which brought hundreds of accidents on iced bridges and thousands of power outages. After a brief warm up, another round of very cold temperatures surged across the region between the 9th and 11th. Soon after, the switch was flipped to spring.
