Severe Thunderstorms in the East Sunday; Excessive Heat Lingers in the Southern U.S. and Returning to California

Scattered damaging winds from severe thunderstorms will be possible across parts of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic States Sunday. Excessive heat will continue over the southern U.S. Sunday before another round of heat arrives Monday through the central and southern U.S. spreading into the East by Independence Day. Overview

Slow moving but intensifying storm. Storm track slightly too far south but trended north to bring heavy snow to the Front Range & Northeast Plains. Tracked from 4 Corners to near PUB and then ENE into Kansas. No cold front, just persistent and deepening upslope. Heavy snow fell the evening of the 1st into early morning hours of the 2nd. Accumulations:

Snowfall Summary (See map to the right)

  • 8-15 inches I-25 Corridor.
  • 8-13 inches Northeast Plains with significant blowing and drifting with 3-4 foot drifts.
  • 8-36 inches Foothills (mostly 12-22 inches).
  • 3-12 inches over the mountains

Impacts Summary:

  • Widespread school closures.
  • Near blizzard conditions on eastern plains with widespread road closures, including I-70 and I-76 E & NE of Denver to the state borders.
  • Over 500 flight cancellations at DIA.
