Snow, Sleet, and Freezing Rain on January 10, 2025

Overview

A surface low pressure system, developing along the Texas Gulf Coast on the evening of January 9th tracked northeastward during the early morning hours on January 10th. Due to a strong southwesterly flow aloft, moisture streamed northward over the top of cold air already present in the lower levels. What began as mostly rain across southern Mississippi and Alabama transitioned to sleet and then snow as dynamic cooling, primarily driven by evaporative cooling rapidly occurred. Due to the already cold ground infrastructure due to several cold days leading up to the event, accumulations occurred rapidly due to very high snowfall rates between 3am and 5am CT along the I-20 corridor. As warmer air aloft began to overtake the evaporative cooling processes, snow transitioned back to sleet and freezing rain before temperatures finally rose above freezing during the afternoon. Meanwhile, farther to the north snow fell for a longer duration in locations such as Hamilton, Double Springs, Oneonta, and Gadsden before changing over to a wintry mix during the afternoon. Accumulations of 2 to 4 inches of snow and sleet were observed along and north of a line from Pickens to Randolph County, with a few higher totals of up to 5 inches. Up to one tenth of an inch of freezing rain was observed in a few locations before temperatures rose above freezing toward the end of the event.
