3 W Selma-6 NE Valley Grande
The tornado first touched down near Alabama Highway 22 just west of Selma and moved northeastward. The fatality occurred when the brick and concrete block wall of an apartment caved in on the couch where the victim was apparently sleeping. Seven students at Selma University received minor injuries when the roof and parts of the second floor of their dormitory was destroyed. The dorm was occupied by 50 students when the storm hit. The other injuries occured to people in their homes that were either damaged or destroyed. At least 103 structures were damaged or destroyed. Additional damage included a new car dealership in which buildings were damaged and 30 to 40 vehicles were destroyed.

The tornado struck a shopping center consisting of an E to W row of adjoining buildings along U.S. 78. The deaths and most of the injuries occurred when a grocery store in the direct path was destroyed. The windward wall apparently failed and the roof of the store collapsed inward. The grocery shelves kept the roof from crashing all the way to the floor and several hours were required for rescuers to reach all of the trapped victims. The 2 deaths were reported to have occurred in the rear or south part of the store. Three single family homes were destroyed and 14 were damaged. One apartment building was damaged. Three mobile homes were destroyed and 11 damaged. Three business buildings were destroyed and 9 damaged as well as 25 to 30 automobiles being either damaged or destroyed.

Witnesses reported seeing several small funnels, white in color, chasing each other in small circles and rapidly going up and down. About 12 houses were damaged in NE Walker County. One boat house was destroyed and several others were heavily damaged. Several cars and boats also suffered damage. In Winston County, 2 homes, a boat and dock and 1 car were damaged. Golf ball size hail was reported in Manchester and 3/4 inch near Smith Lake.

Witnesses reported seeing several small funnels, white in color, chasing each other in small circles and rapidly going up and down. About 12 houses were damaged in NE Walker County. One boat house was destroyed and several others were heavily damaged. Several cars and boats also suffered damage. In Winston County, 2 homes, a boat and dock and 1 car were damaged.
