A National Weather Service damage assessment team evaluated eyewitness reports and surveyed the damage along the interstate. It was determined the damage was the result of a tornado. Around 7:30 AM on August 25th, a brief tornado touched down and snapped off several trees between mile markers 154 and 155 on Interstate 65. This tornado was associated with the remnants of Tropical Storm Fay. The tornado was rated an EF-0 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale. Damage estimates were consistent with winds around 70 MPH.
