Hurricane Andrew - August 1992
The effects of Hurricane Andrew were felt along coastal sections of Alabama on Tuesday, August 25th as Andrew moved northwest across the Gulf of Mexico. Higher than normal tides and winds washed out a fishing pier at Pensacola, Florida and caused tides up to 6 feet along the Alabama coast. Several roads were under 4 feet of water on August 25th.
On August 27th, two confirmed tornadoes touched down across Lowndes, Montgomery, and Elmore counties. The strongest tornado damage was in northern areas of Montgomery, where the tornado track was several hundred yards long. Three homes were destroyed, another six heavily damaged, along with many trees and power lines down.
Also on the 27th, 48 of 67 Alabama counties reported wind damage of trees and power lines down.
