Northport Tornado

NWS meteorologists conducted a storm survey today across areas just north northwest of the center of the city of Northport to the far southeastern portion of Lake Tuscaloosa in Tuscaloosa County. They determined that this area had experienced an F0 tornado...with winds of around 60 mph...during the early morning hours of Saturday...April...30th.

The tornado touchdown around 416 AM CDT about one half mile west of the CR 86...U.S. 43 intersection...around 2.5 miles from the center of the city of Northport. This tornado then moved northeast...crossing state road 69...And county road 47...before lifting near the end of County Road 87...around 424 AM CDT. The path of this tornado was 6.75 miles long and 100 yards wide at its widest point.

Numerous trees were uprooted or snapped...along with several power lines downed...along its path. The most concentrated damage was near the end of its path...from far southeastern portion of Lake Tuscaloosa to near the end of county road 87. In this area...several homes received minor damage...with two homes receiving significant roof damage due to large trees falling on them.

No deaths or injuries were reported. A Tornado Wwarning was issued for Tuscaloosa County from 348 AM CDT to 445 AM CDT on Saturday. A Ttornado Watch was issued from 945 PM CDT Friday to 500 AM CDT Saturday...including Tuscaloosa and several other counties across northern and western Alabama.
