Last Map Update: Thu, Jan 9, 2025 at 10:18:55 pm CST

A winter storm warning is in effect for the northern 1/3 of Central Alabama. Further south across the mid section of Central Alabama, a winter weather advisory is in effect. For Alabama, the winter storm warning is in effect from midnight (12 AM Friday) tonight through 6 AM on Saturday. The winter weather advisory begins at the same time tonight, but expires earlier at 3 pm on Friday.
Persons should review their cold weather safety involving pipes, pets, home heating, and people. For pipes, insulate, drain, or allow water to drip from the faucet at a trickle for pipes located in exposed or unheated locations. Not all pets can handle cold weather. Bring your pets indoors whenever possible or provide a warm and safe location. For alternative heating sources like space heaters and wood stoves, have a 3-foot zone around and follow safety instructions. Utilize carbon monoxide and smoke detectors. For people, dress in layers and minimize exposed skin. Limit time outdoors if not prepared. Check on those without sufficient heating.
Look for increasing cloudiness this evening as precipitation moves in from the west toward the late evening before midnight with overcast conditions expected for the late night hours as precipitation becomes widespread. A wintry mix is expected in the northern 2/3 of Central Alabama. The northern 1/3 will see the greatest snow amounts mixed in with the precipitation. The southern 1/3 should see mainly rain. Overnight low temperatures will range from the middle 20s northeast to the lower 30s south.
Friday will be cloudy. Widespread precipitation is expected across Central Alabama. A wintry mix is expected in the northern 2/3 of Central Alabama, changing over to rain by afternoon except in the higher elevations in the northeast counties. The northern 1/3 will see the greatest snow, sleet, and ice accumulations. The southern 1/3 should see mainly rain. Daytime high temperatures will range from the middle 30s north to the middle to upper 40s far southeast.
