Aviation Forecast Discussion

The National Weather Service at Birmingham issues aviation forecast discussions for several airports in Central Alabama. The purpose of these discussions is to explain significant aviation weather concerns at and near the surface. In addition, scientific reasoning for composing TAFs (Terminal Aerodrome Forecasts) will be addressed.  The FAA (Federal Aviation Administration), pilots, commercial airlines, flight service stations, control towers, and the rest of the aviation community rely heavily on weather information to make important decisions. Weather concerns pertaining directly to aviation users will be addressed in the discussions.

Special emphasis in the discussions will be placed on:

- low ceilings & visibilities
- fog & haze
- strong surface winds & significant wind shifts
- low level (non convective) wind shear
- thunderstorms (wind shear assumed)

The aviation forecast discussions from NWS Birmingham will be focused on the following airports:

ANB - Anniston Metropolitan Airport, Anniston, AL

ASN - Talladega Municpal Airport, Talladega, AL

BHM - Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport, Birmingham, AL

EET - Shelby County Airport, Calera, AL

MGM - Montgomery Regional Airport (Dannelly Field), Montgomery, AL

TCL - Tuscaloosa Regional Airport, Tuscaloosa, AL

TOI - Troy Municipal Airport (N Kenneth Campbell Field), Troy, AL

The aviation forecast discussions will be issued around 00, 06, 12, and 18 UTC and appended to the area forecast discussion (AFDBMX).
