Hurricane Helene will quickly move northward toward the Florida Gulf Coast this evening. Impacts to parts of Central Alabama are expected tonight into Friday. Please stay tuned for the latest forecasts for this system!
Tropical wind threats are expected from Helene through midday Friday. A tropical storm warning is in effect for the far eastern counties of Central Alabama. Winds of 10 - 25 MPH sustained with gusts of up to 40 - 50 MPH are possible. Further west from there through the Interstate 65 corridor, a wind advisory is in effect. Look for sustained winds of 10 - 25 MPH with gusts up to 35 MPH.
A Flood Watch is in effect for counties along & east of Interstate 65 through 7 AM Friday. Excessive rainfall may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, & other low lying & flood prone locations. Flooding may occur in poor drainage & urban areas as well.
For today, rainfall will increase in coverage as Hurricane Helene rapidly approaches the area. Rainfall will be heavy at times across portions of eastern half of the area. Daytime high temperatures will range from the lower 80s west to the lower to middle 70s east.
For tonight, look for widespread rain bands from Helene. Rain will be heavy at times. Conditions will become windy as well. The heaviest rains and strongest winds will be in the eastern half of Central Alabama. Overnight low temperatures will be in the lower to middle 60s.
For Friday, rain bands will continue with the best chances across the northern sections of Central Alabama with breezy conditions. Rainfall amounts should not be as heavy. Daytime high temperatures will range from the upper 60s far northwest to the upper 70s to the lower 80s across the southern tier of counties.
