Severe Weather and Heavy Rain from the Great Lakes to the Mid-Atlantic; Heat Persists in the East

Widespread strong thunderstorms with damaging winds and locally heavy rain are expected from the Upper Ohio Valley into the southern Mid-Atlantic today and portions of the central Appalachians and Carolinas on Saturday. Another hot early September day is expected today. While Palo Duro Canyon is forecast to reach up to 105°F and is under a Heat Advisory, the rest of the Panhandles will warm into the mid-90s to as hot as 103°F.

This weekend looks to continue the "hot trend" with widespread high temperatures peaking in the mid to upper 90's and low 100's across the Panhandles. Friday, there is a scattered chance of showers and thunderstorms across much of the Panhandles. On Saturday, the western Panhandles have a higher chance of showers and thunderstorms, with low chances across the other portions of the Panhandles.

The month of August also wrapped up on warmer and drier than normal. Amarillo and Dalhart both had 18 days of highs at or above 100 degrees. Meanwhile Guymon had 21 days and Borger had 25 days at or above 100 for the whole month! Additionally, Dalhart had a few days of missing precipitation data last month. So, 0.26" is what was recorded despite the site likely receiving a higher amount.
