Tornado Damage & Flooding

August 23, 2014


Summary:

Three tornado touchdowns were recorded on the evening of Saturday August 23rd, 2014. The first tornado was spotted approximately 7 miles west of Cresbard around 5:30 pm. The tornado crossed over highway 20 before lifting. Only minor damage was noted. The tornado was rated EF0, which is consistent with wind speeds between 65 to 85 mph. About 5 minutes later, a second tornado touched down approximately 9 miles west of Cresbard, with minor damage to a garage door and a livestock trailer. This tornado was also rated as an EF0. The third confirmed tornado touchdown was about 3.5 miles northeast of Ipswich with a time estimated at around 6:35 pm. Damage was done to the farmstead at this location. The house lost part of the roof, as well as sections of siding. There was also damage to outbuildings at the site. The second tornado was rated as an EF1, which correlates with winds speeds between 86 to 110 mph. A complete description as well as photos can be found below.

Additionally, the storms dropped heavy rainfall across parts of Faulk, Edmunds, McPherson, and Brown Counties through the night. The heaviest rainfall reports ranged anywhere from 2 to 5 inches. Several roads were underwater within the Aberdeen City limits.

A TORNADO WAS CONFIRMED IN FAULK COUNTY BASED UPON EVIDENCE SEEN IN VIDEOS PROVIDED BY TRAINED SPOTTERS ALONG WITH MINOR TREE DAMAGE SEEN DURING THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE STORM SURVEY. THE TORNADO TOUCHED DOWN ROUGHLY 1 MILE SOUTH OF HIGHWAY 20...TRACKING NORTH...OR JUST WEST OF NORTH...TO A LOCATION ROUGHLY 3/4 MILE NORTH OF HIGHWAY 20. MINOR TREE DAMAGE WAS SEEN

AT A HOUSE LOCATED ALONG HIGHWAY 20 WHERE THE TORNADO CROSSED. DAMAGE OF THIS MAGNITUDE IS CONSISTENT WITH WIND SPEEDS OF 70 MPH...OR EF-0 DAMAGE.

A TORNADO WAS CONFIRMED IN FAULK COUNTY BASED UPON EVIDENCE SEEN DURING A NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE STORM SURVEY...COUPLED WITH SPOTTER REPORTS AND VIDEO FOOTAGE PROVIDED BY TRAINED SPOTTERS. THE TORNADO TOUCHED DOWN ABOUT 0.8 MILES SOUTH OF HIGHWAY 20. THE TORNADO TRAVELED 5 MILES TO THE NORTH NORTHEAST BEFORE LIFTING. THE TORNADO CAUSED MINOR DAMAGE TO TWO FARMSTEADS. A GARAGE DOOR WAS BLOWN OVER THE ROOF OF THE GARAGE ALONG WITH TREE DAMAGE AT ONE PLACE. A LIVESTOCK TRAILER WAS BLOWN OVER ALONG WITH MORE TREE DAMAGE AT THE SECOND PLACE. DAMAGE OF THIS MAGNITUDE IS CONSISTENT WITH WIND SPEEDS OF 75 TO 80 MPH...OR EF-0 DAMAGE.

A TORNADO WAS CONFIRMED IN EDMUNDS COUNTY BASED UPON EVIDENCE SEEN DURING A NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE STORM SURVEY. THE TORNADO TOUCHED DOWN ABOUT 3.5 MILES NORTHEAST OF IPSWICH...TRAVELING ABOUT 1 MILE TO THE NORTHEAST BEFORE LIFTING. DAMAGE WAS SUSTAINED TO A FARMHOUSE IN THIS LOCATION. THE HOUSE LOST A SECTION OF ITS ROOF ALONG WITH SIDING. A METAL OUTBUILDING ALSO LOST THE MAJORITY OF ITS ROOF AND A TRACTOR WAS DAMAGED DUE TO FLYING DEBRIS. THERE WAS ALSO TREE DAMAGE AND A DENTED GRAIN BIN AT THIS LOCATION. DAMAGE OF THIS MAGNITUDE IS CONSISTENT WITH WIND SPEEDS OF 90 TO 95 MPH...OR EF-1 DAMAGE.
