July 2018 was a great example of the "Have's" and the "Have Not's," but the good news is, nearly all areas did better this July than July 2017. Since the only official stations are the Albuquerque Sunport and a handful of cooperative observers for the Weather Service, dedicated members of the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow (CoCoRaHS) Network help fill in the gaps across the Albuquerque Metro area. Below are two maps showing the distribution of precipitation for July 2017 and July 2018.

Quite the contrast, no? Most areas across the metro last July struggled to reach the one inch mark, but this July, only portions of the southwest side and south valley struggled to reach that mark. Fortunately, most other areas generally received 2 or more inches, while areas around Four Hills received over a whopping 7 inches. For those keeping track, the 7+ inches this July was roughly equal to as much rain as that area received last monsoon season!

The last week or so of July was an especially active period. Measurable precipitation was recorded 6 of the last 8 days of the month at the Sunport and most locations across the metro. Unfortunately, the rains were often heavy and caused some flash flooding. On July 23rd, Paseo del Volcan was closed due to flooding at U.S. 550 in Rio Rancho. Later, on July 26th, a fire truck was pulled from the flood waters under the Central Avenue bridge near 1st Street. Additionally, on July 5th, significant flash flooding struck the Enchanted Hills area in northern Rio Rancho. Several roads were closed in the area including the intersection of U.S. 550 and NM 528. Over 2 inches of rain was recorded by several observers in Enchanted Hills, most of which fell in less than 90 minutes. |

2006 largely set the benchmark for big time rains. This July was certainly not as plentiful area wide as 2006, but the Four Hills area actually did better! The image to the right uses the same scale as above. The Sunport recorded 2.21 inches this year, and 3.55 inches in 2006. |

Normal July precipitation at the Albuquerque Sunport is 1.50 inches. This July, the Sunport received 2.21 inches, 0.71 inches above normal, and well above last year's amount of 0.85 inches. Below are tables for the wettest and driest July's on record since 1897. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
