Albuquerque July Precipitation: 2016 vs. 2017

Very similar to July 2016, Albuquerquean's called this Monsoon many names - the "Nonsoon," the "Spotsoon" - among others. But, there were a few days where the sky opened up and poured over Albuquerque. Did you forget already? Then read on!

Since the only official stations are the Albuquerque Sunport and a handful of cooperative observers for the Weather Service, dedicated members of the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow (CoCoRaHS) Network help fill in the gaps across Albuquerque. Below are two maps showing the distribution of precipitation across Albuquerque for July 2016 and July 2017.

Do you remember when all of the Albuquerque Metro Area received above normal precipitation for the month of July in 2015?  A distant memory for sure, since most of the metro area was below normal in both 2016 and 2017.

Three areas on the map stand out as having more precipitation than the rest of the area, but all three areas can be attributed to only two days of rainfall. Across the northeast heights and near the Four Hills area, storms dumped very heavy rainfall. Up to 1.8 inches of rain fell across the northeast heights in one hour on the evening of July 17th. Flash flooding quickly commenced, with the brunt of the flash flooding noted along Academy where one water rescue took place. That same evening, additional storms impacted the Four Hills area. Just over one inch of rain fell in that area, though no significant flooding resulted. Fast forward to July 31st, the end of the month, when significant rains finally returned to the metro area. This time, portions of far northwest Albuquerque and southern portions of Rio Rancho were the big rainfall winners, reporting just under 1.5 inches. Though, truth be told, other areas of Albuquerque did well on July 31st, too, with up to three-quarters of an inch reported across the northeast heights!

2006 largely set the benchmark for big time rains. This July was certainly not as plentiful as 2006! The image to the right uses the same scale as above. The Sunport recorded 0.85 inches this year, and 3.55 inches in 2006.
