A late season winter storm will bring widespread rain and snow to New Mexico. Though all but mountain areas will see rainfall initially, a cold front racing south and west tonight into Saturday will allow much of the rain to change over to snow. Between 8 and 14 inches of snow is expected across the Northern Mountains with 2 to 6 inches common elsewhere across eastern NM. Spotty snowfall amounts expected across western NM.
Snow and blowing snow Friday night and Saturday will contribute to widespread minor and moderate impacts, and major impacts around Raton Pass. Poor visibility is expected in falling and blowing snow across eastern NM. The weight of the snow combined with strong winds could break branches on trees that have already leafed out.
Much colder temperatures are in store for Saturday. High temperatures will be between 15 and 40 degrees below normal and gusty winds will make it feel even colder.
After the winter storm exits, very cold temperatures will be in its wake. Most areas across northern and central NM will see a hard freeze. Protect pipes, pets and plants that have already been planted for the season.
Even in the middle of the afternoon, it will feel like temperatures are in the teens across eastern NM due to much colder temperatures and strong northerly winds.
A strong cold front will bring gusty winds to portions of central and all of eastern New Mexico tonight and Saturday. Gusts of 40 to 50 mph will be common from the north and east. Secure loose outdoor items such as patio furniture, and be cautious about blowing snow (eastern New Mexico) and dust (Albuquerque to Socorro areas).
