There is a marginal risk of a few storms briefly becoming severe over the central highlands and south-central mountains (including Ruidoso) Sunday afternoon. Cloud-to-ground lightning, severe winds, and hail will be the main hazards from any of these storms.
Scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop just east of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and the Highlands. Storms then develop southward towards the Sacramento Mountains. Gusty winds from virga and storm outflow could cause a decrease in visibility with dust and blow over lightweight and unsecure objects.
A cold front pushing southward thru eastern New Mexico Sunday morning will produce gusts of 35-50 mph. Hazardous crosswinds for high profile will produce difficult travel conditions along east-to-west oriented highways.
A cold front pushes through the gaps of the central mountain chain Sunday evening, producing east canyon wind gusts of 30 to 45 mph into Santa Fe and Albuquerque.
High temperatures rise into the 80s and 90s over much of New Mexico starting Tuesday of next week. This introduces a moderate risk of heat-induced illnesses for sensitive populations over the lower elevations and central and eastern NM where highs are forecast to climb into the mid-to-upper 90s.
Here are the forecast highs and precipitation chances across northern and central New Mexico over the next 7 days.
