Steve Asbury, Powell County Emergency Management Director, was recognized as the eastern Kentucky Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador of Excellence for 2019.

Steve is at the forefront of advocating the Weather-Ready Nation initiative by participating in multiple office exercises where he brings his emergency management expertise to the table. He participated in a nationally recognized workshop in Norman, OK, as part of the Hazardous Weather Testbed, where participants looked at new ways to communicate hazard risk and provided constructive feedback to developers. Steve volunteered to speak about this experience at a meeting of the Kentucky Weather Preparedness Committee-East, providing the committee insight into future NWS products that will aid in improved public understanding and response. This further exemplifies his efforts to keep the people of Powell County, Kentucky and beyond safe from all weather hazards and his leadership toward becoming Weather Ready.

Each National Weather Service office across the country was tasked with naming an "Ambassador of Excellence". The award is meant to recognize those WRN Ambassadors who have made significant contributions to building a Weather-Ready Nation.  Click here to view all of the Ambassadors of Excellence from across the country.

NOAA’s Weather-Ready Nation is building community resilience in the face of increasing vulnerability to extreme weather, water and climate events. To achieve this goal, the National Weather Service is working with its partners, but requires the participation and commitment of a vast nationwide network of Ambassadors. Everyday, Weather-Ready Nation Ambassadors serve a pivotal role in affecting societal change, sharing safety messaging, serving as an example, and highlighting successes - all helping to build a Weather-Ready Nation!
