...New All-time Record Low for the month of April Established for
the State of Arkansas...

On April 8th, 2018, the temperature at Kingston 2 S in Madison
County (elevation 2,145 feet) fell to 9 degrees above zero.

The cooperative observer station at Kingston 2 S is under the
responsibility of the Tulsa, Oklahoma National Weather Service
Forecast Office. Officials from the Tulsa office visited the site
to verify the accuracy of this reading. It was determined that the
reading is valid. The reading also corroborated with a couple of
other nearby readings of 11 degrees from a variety of instrument
types.

Thus, the reading of 9 above zero at Kingston 2 S on April 8th,
2018 establishes a new record low temperature for the state of
Arkansas for the month of April.

Since reliable record keeping began in the 19th century in
Arkansas, this is the first verified occurrence of a single digit
reading in the month of April in the state.

The previous record low for Arkansas for the month of April was
12 degrees, which was recorded at Lead Hill in Boone County on
April 13, 1957 and tied on April 8, 2007.

Not surprisingly, statewide, this is shaping up to be one of the
coldest Aprils on record. Through the 26th, the average
temperature for the state has been around 53.8 degrees. The
coldest April for the state was 1907, with an average temperature
of 54.0 degrees, the second coldest was 1983, with an average
temperature of 54.4 degrees, and the third coldest was 1904, with
an average temperature of 55.9 degrees. It is increasingly likely
that April 2018 will end up being at least the 2nd coldest April
on record.
