Hottest Summer on Record for San Angelo and Abilene


The summer of 2011…for June, July and August, was the hottest
on record at both San Angelo and Abilene.  Numerous heat records
were set. 

Temperature records date back to 1907 for San Angelo and 1886 for
Abilene.

At San Angelo Regional Airport, the average temperature for the
summer season (June, July, and August) was 89.3 degrees.  This
set a new record for the warmest summer season.  The previous
warmest summer (from an average temperature perspective) was in
1910, when the average summer temperature was 85.8 degrees.

At Abilene Regional Airport, the average summer season temperature
was 89.3 degrees.  This also set a new record for the warmest summer
season.  The previous warmest summer (from an average temperature
perspective) was in 1980, when the average summer temperature was
86.6 degrees.

In addition to the summer season, new and astounding records were
set for the individual summer months.

At San Angelo, the average temperature for each summer month of
June, July, and August was not only the warmest on record for
each of those respective months, but also the all-time warmest
months since records began in 1907.

At Abilene, the average temperature for June was the second warmest
on record.  For July and August, the average temperature was not
only the warmest on record for each of those respective months,
but also the all-time warmest months since records began in 1886.

In addition to the summer seasonal and monthly
temperature records, many daily high temperature
records were either set or tied at San Angelo and
Abilene, along with record warm daily low
temperatures.

Daily record high (and low) temperatures date back
to 1907 at San Angelo and 1886 at Abilene. Daily
record warm low (and record cool high) temperatures
date back to 1947 for both San Angelo and Abilene.

At San Angelo, 14 days were marked by record high
temperatures set or tied, and there were 22 days
with record warm low temperatures set or tied.

At Abilene, 14 days were marked by record high
temperatures set or tied, and there were 29 days
with record warm low temperatures set or tied.
